Giants safety Antrel Rolle compares booing NFL players to booing soldiers coming home from Iraq
NY Daily News ^ | 12-2-10 | Kristie Ackert

"They want to make it that guys paid this much money for a ticket, yeah, I understand that, I understand completely. We risk ourselves out there on the field each and every day also. When soldiers come home from Iraq you don't boo them. I look at it the same way. I take my job seriously," Rolle said.

"I appreciate my fans, I appreciate them to the fullest, I am gonna continue to play for them as I always have. I am going to continue to be the best guy I could be for them. Nothing's gonna change," Rolle continued. There's not a real big deal. They asked a question. I gave them an answer."

Still, he says he is unapologetic about being a "bigmouth," and his willingness to say whatever is on his mind.

Read the story, freep the poll!

“Big Mouth Athletes?

Do athletes talk too much?

Yes. They should speak with their actions on the field or court. And nowhere else.

No. They are celebrities with a public forum, and they have a right to say whatever they like. We needn’t listen.

Not sure.”

YOU ARE CHITTING ME, RIGHT??

Maybe the NFL should pass out weapons to fans and when a player screws up a play, they open fire on him.

Might give these pampered and overpaid primadonnas an appreciation for what some grunt hauling 100# of battle rattle in a 120 degree desert and making 17K a year is experiencing in the Middle East.

Play poorly and you get booed. That’s life in the big leagues. $37 million to whine.

Shoulda heard the Bronco faithful booing the Denver Donkeys this week. Getting close to bag over the head time.

How embarrassing. Ugh.

Sort of reminds me of when Joe Montana, quite a while ago, made a similar comment comparing football injuries to injuries sustained by police and firefighters in the line of duty.

If you screw up on the baseball field, you get an error and become the butt of jokes on late night TV.

If you screw up on the battle field, you or one of your buddies comes home in a box or on a strecher.

What an ignorant, self-important ingrate.

Antrel, you have no idea how good you have it in this wonderful country, and you have no concept of what was sacrificed in order for you to speak so foolishly.

"Booo" doesn't cover my contempt for you.

Athletes who make it to the pros are never forced to give up the adolescence they started out with. Imagine if u were still doing the same thing YOU did in High School. Some grow up but many never do. IMHO...

I'm embarrassed to be a Giants Fan.

I "risk" myself "out there" too, but don't whine about it.

Shoulda heard the Bronco faithful booing the Denver Donkeys this week. Getting close to bag over the head time.

This was flying around the Internet for a while:

Colorado Judge gives 7 year old right to decide custody

A seven year old boy was at the center of a county courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy had a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Denver Broncos, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

When entertainers don't entertain they get booed.

When soldiers don't fight, they get killed.

I have always said the NFL needs to pass out a standardized sheet of football players responses and a separate sheet of head coaches’ responses. They would be similar but customized. Response number one on both sheets would be something like, “We’ve got to play to their their weaknesses. They’re a good football team, but we’re better.” The next would be something like, “We’ve got to play better offense this week but we know we can beat them.” Somewhere along the line would something Rolle could have used: “Listen, we know we’re number one in our hearts, and our fans needs to support us.” This way, even idiots can stay out of mouth trouble.

There was a lot of truth to what Montana said.

Take your average firefighter and your average police officer, and compare their average life expectancy to the average life expectancy of a retired NFL player. The numbers are startling.

It would appear the narcissistic, tribal clown show has expanded from the buffoons at the WR position, to the cretinous gangsta thugs in the defensive backfield.

Football players’ jobs are to play a sport. If they get hurt, it’s not like they got hurt trying to save lives, dealing with difficult and dangerous situations and people, or really do anything meaningful in the big picture. Football is entertainment. I found his analogy very offensive.

You might find it offensive, but I don't think it was completely out of line.

There was an article posted here a while back with lists of the most dangerous jobs in America and the most over-hyped jobs in terms of risk. If I remember correctly, both firefighters and police officers made the "over-hyped" list . . . mainly because the high-profile nature of the incidents involving them tends to exaggerate the real risk of those jobs.

Having said that . . . it IS true that athletes are entertainers and their comments should always be viewed with this in mind.

During this past election, the NFL donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Washington State Democrats and nothing - zero, nada, zilch — to Republicans.

At our home, we will not be watching any NFL games during the forthcoming season. For my family, the NFL is dead!

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree here. Entertainers getting injured entertaining will never rise to the level of public servants getting injured in the line of duty...at least to me. I’m sorry you see it differently.
