What are the odds someone else has used your Social Security number? One in 7.
Thats the stunning conclusion of a San Diego company's analysis of 290 million Social Security numbers, which found that 40 million of them have been attached to more than one name. The study, conducted by the fraud-fighting firm ID Analytics, is the first of its kind thats been made available to the public.

It is refreshing to see some truth about the usage of Social Security numbers. It is maddening to see the lack of government action to control fraud and inform citizens. Republicans in Congress need to add Social Security fraud and citizen rights to its long list of legislative priorities.

So, our whole social security system is basically wrecked, even if it wasn’t a big ponzi scheme?

Do the math.
Your SSN is a nine-digit number.
That means there are 999,999,999 + 1 (for 000-00-0000) or 1 billion possible SSNs.
Since there are currently 250,000,000 US citizens, at least one-fourth of those are in use.
A randomly-generated SSN has a one-in-four chance of being legitimate.

Sure, but Hussein is using a couple dozen numbers so that skews the odds.

Just think if we had fifty or more illegal aliens paying in on our SSNs? We could retire to big gated estates in Cancun and live like 0bamas in our golden years. ;^)

The democrat politician money machine has used a SS# scam to funnel billions over the years. A full exposure of the SS# scams would reveal their criminality. Can't have that. Barry the Bastard using several SS# is small potatoes compared to the criminal enterprise use of commandeered SS#s don’tchaknow.

You get a statement from Social Security every year that shows your earnings on it. Match that up to your W-2. If there’s more showing on your Social Security statement than on your W-2 then it’s time to talk to the credit agencies.

Those are much better odds than picking a combo lock.

Well, dang it! I just got my statement and no one’s using mine but me. :~/

I suspect a lot of those are going to turn out to be one-digit typos in payroll systems, etc.
Still an excellent reason why the card used to say NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES!

Still an excellent reason why the card used to say NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES!The ones issued since at least early 2000 don't say this - my wife's (legal name change for our marriage), my son's and my daughter's cards do not have this phrase on them. Mine does, but it dates to the 80s when I started working as a teen.
