Collins says 'Don't ask, don't tell' repeal must wait for tax cuts

Democrats hoping to move forward with legislation other than tax cuts shouldn't look to centrist Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) to break the logjam.

Collins said again on Friday that, while she would vote with Democrats to end the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, she wouldn't do so until a debate over tax cuts has been resolved.

"Once the tax issue is resolved, I have made it clear that if the Majority Leader brings the Defense Authorization bill to the floor with sufficient time allowed for debate and amendments, I would vote to proceed to the bill," she said in a statement.

The statement is a sign that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (Ky.) Republican conference hasn't fractured in its insistence that the expiring tax cuts be dealt with prior to action on any other legislative business.

All 42 Senate Republicans wrote Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to inform him that the GOP wouldn't allow any other issues to move before tax cuts during the lame-duck session. That includes the defense authorization bill, to which an amendment is attached that would do away with the military's prohibition on openly gay and lesbian members.

That bill appears to have the 60 votes necessary to proceed through the Senate — but not until tax cuts are addressed.

Reid will convene a rare Saturday session tomorrow to vote on tax cuts, but on a version that Republicans are expected to oppose. Democrats will bring two bills to the floor: one that would extend all tax cuts for those making less than $250,000 and another measure meant as a compromise, which would extend tax cuts for all making less than $1 million.

Deb, glad to see you didn’t reply to central_va. He will never stop.

Really, central_va, what is it with your CONSTANT use of insults? You’ve personally attacked me on threads as if your own opinions are the only ones that matter - even though our opinions aren’t that much different, and I’ve now seen you do it to others twice on this thread. Guess what? Your attacks on fellow FReepers doesn’t help anyone and it lessens the impact of the message you’re trying to get across.

Well on a public forum if you act stupidly, then you get flamed. That is the rules. Fire back, I’m a big boy. Flame on McDuff.

Where are the surveys for Americans to say if DADT should be repealed and we need to find out what will replace it.

Should Free Republic take up the fight for the men and women who are fighting for us?

If I were a senate Republican I'd say screw this unless you can show me where military readiness would be enhanced.

But that would require some cojonnes...something that the Republicans still have to prove they have!

I see FR’s resident homolover has popped up to sicken the thread. Fortunately most here see it quite celarly - Anyone for open faggotry in the military is a traitor to the US military. May they rot in hell.

I do not understand why the Repubs continue referring to extending tax rates that have been in effect for a decade as the “Bush Tax Cuts”. If anything, they should be referring to the tax rates not being extended as the “Obama Tax Hike”.

If we wanted to end all this “don’t ask, don’t tell” nonsense, all we would need to do is re-institute the draft and make a law that states that at least 25% of the enlisted ranks must be comprised of non-volunteer draftees. Then you would see the Homosexual lobby crying for a return to the law that categorically prohibits homosexuals from being members of the Armed Services.

Here is the difference, you go to work and follow those rules, you go home and do what you want. Now imagine if you had to live with your co-workers 24/7?

STOP!!!!!

Yes, they serve, they serve as Soldiers, NOT Gay Soldiers!!! Once they become hyphenated they now become their own special group with in a world where it is supposed to be WE and NOT ME!

I can promise you, while the troops are disciplined enough to get the job done, they cannot be forced to accept something that makes them uncomfortable!! They will be shunned in the barracks, after hours, etc. They will never be accepted by most and will not be part of the camaraderie that is forged being together 24/7. At my son’s duty station there are 2 guys in particular that the guys get the vibes from, but it is not known for sure. They work together, etc. but the pact is nobody is ever alone with them and they really don’t bother with them outside of work.

The nation is sinking to the bottom of the lake, awash in debt, and DADT is treated as if it is something of importance? The US will not afford an army when the tax hikes take effect.

So it comes down to your word against my word as in any sexual assault or sexual harassment case. And these instances are not being reported. So, DADT should be repealed and replaced with....NO homosexuals serving in the military.

I was just wondering, and I do that a lot, if, since all the homosexual people I know do not have a close loving relationship with their same sex parent, if, there were any young people who had been in the closet, and after having served in the military and developed a close mentoring relationship with a same sex commander, realized he/she was not homosexual?

How do you explain me having go into the clean linen closet and separate the waitresses from the swarthy bus-boys with a crowbar?

Excuse me, but I don't quite understand what you meant here. Are you saying you have to separate these uniforms in the linen closet? Or actual persons hiding in the linen closet?

DADT should be repealed.

the country needs to go back before Bill Cliton made this semi-legitimization of military gayness.....and make being gay an instant reason for kicking someone out of the military, no matter where the information comes from.

Is this supposed survey on line for us to see.

3 branches of the military have said no to getting rid of don’t ask, the survey has been taken out of context, the media are not telling the truth and still the rats push this crap and on top of all the problems we face right now.

there are a couple of 1999 posters who put their pro homo post up and ten disappear., curious isn’t it?

queers said that they just want civil unions so they was given it but then they said marriage.
queers said they want don’t ask as it is their private life but now they want to pansy around base and have now queer parties on base.

The GOP needs to get some guts and stop this crap as the queer agenda will keep making little inroads until they have ruined this great country and her military

Don’t be such a retarded punk. Republicans will NEVER allow DADT to be repealed in exchange for anything. Get your head outta your dark, stinky place.
