Collins says 'Don't ask, don't tell' repeal must wait for tax cuts
The Hill ^ | 12/03/10 04:02 PM ET | Michael O'Brien

Democrats hoping to move forward with legislation other than tax cuts shouldn't look to centrist Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) to break the logjam.

Collins said again on Friday that, while she would vote with Democrats to end the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, she wouldn't do so until a debate over tax cuts has been resolved.

"Once the tax issue is resolved, I have made it clear that if the Majority Leader brings the Defense Authorization bill to the floor with sufficient time allowed for debate and amendments, I would vote to proceed to the bill," she said in a statement.

The statement is a sign that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (Ky.) Republican conference hasn't fractured in its insistence that the expiring tax cuts be dealt with prior to action on any other legislative business.

All 42 Senate Republicans wrote Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to inform him that the GOP wouldn't allow any other issues to move before tax cuts during the lame-duck session. That includes the defense authorization bill, to which an amendment is attached that would do away with the military's prohibition on openly gay and lesbian members.

That bill appears to have the 60 votes necessary to proceed through the Senate — but not until tax cuts are addressed.

Reid will convene a rare Saturday session tomorrow to vote on tax cuts, but on a version that Republicans are expected to oppose. Democrats will bring two bills to the floor: one that would extend all tax cuts for those making less than $250,000 and another measure meant as a compromise, which would extend tax cuts for all making less than $1 million.

Please let it die until next session. There are now 63 congressman who need to go before the will of the people is reflected.

Where are the surveys for Americans to say if DADT should be repealed and we need to find out what will replace it.

"They" have already had those surveys -listen to the news and you will hear just how welcoming Americans are to homosexual sex -the country is supposedly all for homosexual sex -we love it like we love Obama, like we love socialism. like we love health care reform etcetera... Those little problems that pop up every once and awhile like Proposition 8 and the last election are just anomalies caused by the rich and the racists and haters you know...

Should Free Republic take up the fight for the men and women who are fighting for us?

I think we already are -by not buying the lies, by sticking together to remind ourselves we are the majority. The truth will set us free from the power grab the leftist tyrants tried and are now failing at... The leftists day are numbered and what we see now is last ditch efforts -acts of desperation from those getting kicked to the curb. The purge has begun...

The writing is on the wall -the Tea Party and the last election were just the beginning...

Is this supposed survey on line for us to see.

Good question. I will see what I can find out on it.

I do know one thing -just like health care "reform" or much of the other legislation recently pushed through by the leftists -the truth seems to only slowly seep out AFTER the deed is done. I would suspect this is no different.

They publish a "survey" then want to rush through the legislation. Why the rush? IF the American people can suffer through TSA groping and put up with a never ending gulf oil drilling ban for the sake of caution THEN why must the left rush like fools to experiment with the military?

It is real simple to see that the left has no principles -it is all about the ends justifying the means -just like any other elite tyrant that thinks they are God -they want their way REGARDLESS the consequences... They know that they can create heaven on earth and will literally and figuratively kill anything and or anyone that gets in their way doing so. It is a story as old as man -the fools and their useful idiots are just repeating the mistakes of the past...

nail on head.

I;d love to see this supposed survey along with the media actually doing their job and reporting that it was Manning a homosexual who stole the document . Right now the media will only talk about wikileaks because they know manning hurts the homosexual cause right now.

Both angles tie in together IMHO

Here is a copy of the service member survey questionnaire. I think there was a spouses questionnaire as well...

Don’t be such a retarded punk. Republicans will NEVER allow DADT to be repealed in exchange for anything. Get your head outta your dark, stinky place.

I hope you're right, but know it's on the table. This is how it works with the RINOs you love to run with. Naive, they name is DEB.

Drink the RINO kool aid much?

thank you for putting that survey up and having gone through it then I know for a certain that the whole thing is flawed especially knowing not many returned the survey and many were from those who live off base.

It does not ask do you want don’t ask to be repealed nor does it ask do you want homosexuals at all in your unit.

The whole supposed survey is flawed and as a vet I am disgusted at how those questions were asked and now twisted to suit the homosexual community.

again thank you for taking the time to find this and put it on here and I just hope others on here read this survey tripe and then spread the word at how the corrupt survey is and how the media is lying when it comes to this issue.

I cannot believe even for bozo the clown that this is an issue when we are fighting two wars, trouble on the border, unemployment and our enemies are getting stronger while we look for cuts.
ASTOUNDING even for the Dems.

LOL -I think "they" gave up trying to pull the wool over my eyes long ago. My style is probably more brash than yours. In essence, I think "they" try to take advantage of your obvious good nature and sense of justice...

Because that's the way it works. We have a corrupt RINO party running things. Watch out. We can't rest until this Flame Duck Session is relegated to the dust bin of history.

The Snowes, Collins, Goobers and McStains are cutting back room deals. Mark my words.

Yes, as a matter of fact I just received a private response saying that it would have been a pleasure meeting the founder of planned barrenhood, so, what I did was reply to myself on the thread that they were referring to, and copied and pasted their private reply in it, so it was no longer private. It’s not against the law, but should have been wikileaked. So I did. I usually do private mail when I go off topic or am extremely religious.

I do wonder if the ban of the DADT policy is lifted the one percent not ten percent as lied to in psychology/sociology books since the early 1980's nor the lies the homosexual community began spewing almost immediately AFTER AIDS was found in openly homosexual communities in the Castro District in SF and Greenwich Village are of NY[don't remember exactly where in NY, relying on my mushy brain])that homosexuality is not just a homosexual issue. Well, of course not now!.

Okay, so homosexuals DO get their way. What of living quarters for mates? What of the Bisexual folks that may be doinking women on post of off post/bases. When will common law marriages between open homosexuals in the military begin planning their marriages on base, and moving in their lovers and demand say extra arrangement for their mates and surrogate children? Or the adopted children or children created by other women, need an oven? Will there be free clinics on base for those wishing surrogates or amniocentesis? Laws are different from state to state, even on homosexual adoption

What of children of openly homosexual parents going to school on base and such? There's a milieu of reasons NOT to even consider such a huge barrage of legal issues which are not aren't even worked out yet in the civilian world.

I do think there would be more lawyers, more battles in the legal divisions tying up JAG's and (yee gads) the ACLU. Now guys( and some gals) that have been homosexual were good soldiers. And what of all the soldiers that, after being released from service for their homosexuality start civil suits against the military from back pay to retroactive shanges in their discharge papers?

AND as far as I've read the "genetic link is BS propaganda. It's been wrong for thousands of years for that reason, it's just not seen as normal behavior by man, beast or God but it's now so PCV; which doesn't mean it's RIGHT! nor moral.

You shouldn’t vote for DADT repeal even if you get tax cuts. You don’t play with the military just because you get to keep the tax rates at current levels.
