Food stamp use doubles in county

By Stephanie Taylor Staff Writer

Published: Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 3:30 a.m.

The amount of money for food assistance given to Tuscaloosa County residents has more than doubled in the past five years.

In September 2005, residents from 7,672 households in the county received $1.6 million in money from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. By September this year, that number had risen to 11,750 households receiving $3.5 million, according to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

“A lot of people I see, it’s the first time they’ve had to ask for assistance with anything,” said Christy Horner, family support specialist for Tuscaloosa’s One Place, a social service agency. “I think it has a lot to do with job layoffs.”

The food assistance program once provided actual food stamps to people, but now provides Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards that recipients use like credit cards.

For what we spend on foodstamps we could be colonizing Mars. Instead we have the fattest poor people in the history of mankind. If Spain had foodstamps back in 1492, Columbus would not have discovered America.

Food stamps can purchase T-bone steaks, lobster, Cokes, candy and potato chips. They cannot be used to buy toilet paper, deodorant, or tampons. Low income people need tp more than t-bone...

More and more people dependent on goobermint. Lots of goobermint incentives to not work and not have a nuclear family with a husband and wife. A lesser percentage of people paying the taxes that pay for these give-aways. Less self-reliance, more dependency.

We’re on a really bad trajectory and it has to be turned around soon or we are bound to collapse.

We’re on the same trajectory as Greece, but we don’t have the EU or anyone else to bail us out.

But, according to Pelosi & Reid, Food stamps is what will get this economy back on it's feet the fastest! Think about all those trucks hired to hire all that free food, the farmers growing the food, the market employees hired to stock the shelves, the extra checkouts needed to handle the flood of people!

“It's a booming economic stimulus! It's just what we need to jump start this economy! It's the fastest way to get this economy going again!”.......(Says Nancy & Harry.)

Oh, and, don't forget all those now on Welfare! They are going to go out and spend that Welfare check at retail stores as well. This is real and lasting economic stimulus folks!

By golly!

See, the Democrats, in order to own voting blocs, have to get people totally dependent on them. That way, total power forever, they think. As long as they can soak the “rich”; but they haven’t actually thought it through. Unintended consequences, you see.

For all of those who say we need less self-reliance, more dependency, I agree but what is one to do when there are no jobs? 5 unemployed people for every job opening.

Food stamps are the modern day equivalent of soup kitchens from the Great Depression. Some here would do away with even basic soup lines. Hope the hard times never hit you.

California:

Food Stamp Failure
County Misses Out on $47 Million in Federal Benefits

The electronic food stamp card is officially known in California as the Golden State Advantage Card.[Guide]

"Barriers to accessing these benefits, said Maria Gardner, assistant deputy director for social services in Santa Barbara, is what turns people off from applying. “Sometimes people don’t even bother applying because it’s so complex,” Gardner said. Quarterly income reporting, fingerprinting, and multiple trips to social services departments — " more

".....people with jobs usually don't have time to fill out all the paperwork and go through the interview process"

"Assemblymember Felipe Fuentes (D-Sylmar) plans to introduce legislation in December to lighten the paperwork burden and excessive trips to the social services office...move California to the “simplified reporting” rules — reporting twice instead of four times per year — used in 49 other states...end California’s costly and redundant fingerprint system ...all adult members of CalFresh households must come to one of its offices to provide prints. “We’re just trying to ease the process.”

If it's just too harrrd to do all this... I have to work. You want to fingerprint me!!!? TMI!

How hungry are you really?

You are so correct. This is a sure sign of a much deeper problem. America is too far gone to pull itself out I'm afraid.

Most of the population now live in rented apartments in large Urban areas. They have the mentality that they are held down by the evil Capitalists, who hoard all the wealth for themselves, and keep the poor, poor while the get richer.

They have been lead to believe that Government is the answer to control or stop that unfair flow of wealth to those filthy rich people who steal it legally. To them, Government takes care of them, provides them with unlimited health care, transportation, housing, food, income, etc,.

It's Marxism in it's beginning form. We have had a light form of Socialism since Woodrow Wilson, which became stronger under FDR and now, we have the beginning of a Marxist state and a Nationalist Socialism economic structure.

It's no wonder that large Corporations are moving out in increasing numbers. There is little that we can do to stop this Juggernaut now. It has to completely collapse in on itself for this to turn itself around. (Unfortunately)

Kill the jobs and hand outs for all......... Omg more people are receiving assistance, who would have ever foreseen or expected that?

Well, we’re just all to dumb to understand the deep nuance economic theories and social policies at work here.

I get sick to my stomach reading some of the uninformed knee jerk posts on this site standing up for the wall street mafia and trashng joe blow who is just trying to pay his/her bills.

and spare me the bs abut standing up for the “Free market” and “Capitilism”. What a pathetic joke that anyone still says that in light of revelations this past week by the FED.

We live in a corporate/govt/fascist state where the well connected soclialize their losses on us, and privatize the profits on to themselves

In a real free market - those wall street gangsters who greatly contributed to this mess would have failed, gone bankrupt, and on welfare themselves.

Most of those bums look down on small business owners who actually produce a product and service of value while they themselves probably would not last a week running your typical construction company, food business, etc etc.

I’m just sick of this crap already where people are defending the criminals in govt/wall street who caused ths, an trashing those at the end of the line feeling the worst impacts of this.

Large corporations are moving out because of aid and assistance of the govt.

Most large corporations would not exist but for the bailouts, govt contracts, and loop holes and carve outs granted by the govt.
