Senate Republicans on Saturday voted against extending the Bush tax cuts to only the middle class in a pair of votes Democrats are seizing to paint the GOP as guardians of the rich.
The Senate voted 53-36 to extend all expiring tax cuts on individuals with incomes of less than $200,000 a year and married couples making less than $250,000 -- seven shy of the required 60 to advance.
The other proposal, which drew opposition from White House officials, would have renewed them for all tax filers with incomes of $1 million or less. That also failed in a 53-36 vote.

Well, that makes 2 of us. I thought the same thing until I read past the title.
Someone here at work was crying about this, and I told them the dems added too much baggage to something that shouldn’t. But the media will find a way to blame it on the republicans....and sure enough.
‘Have we been had ??’
No. The idea is to reduce the rates for everybody. The Senate already has a majority for this, as will the new House. Obama does not want to see the tax increases on everybody, he has to choose everybody or nobody, so long as the tax rates are not fixed for the middle class only. He can make the deal now, or wait for the new Congress to pass the bill retroactively.
Dittos...you don't vote, you can't complain...period.
When was the last time a poor or middle income person offered you a job? Wealthy people create jobs in the pursuit of more wealth. FACT.
raising taxes on job creators = less jobs
buy a clue or take your class warfare bs back to DU
It doesn’t matter if they are creating jobs or not, there is no justification to punish people who have been successful by extorting more tax money from them. I am so pleased they squashed this move by the Democrats. Let everyone feel the pain of voting Democrat.
Doggone bipartisans voted this effort down.
I agree. I was making a purely utilitarian point because the previous poster obviously has no understanding of basic economics.
I understand. I just keep hearing and reading that these are the job creators. I don’t care if they are or aren’t. I don’t care if someone wants to take their tax savings, place every dollar in a neat little pile and start it on fire because that is what I’d rather do with it than see it go to the government. I’d rather NOT even make it in the first place.
I think the economic mess the Rats have created has made the public aware that the class warfare approach hurts everyone. Unemployment has gone up to 9.8% and most people understand if jobs are going to be created they won't be by guys making less than 250K.
I love telling our janitors "when was the last time you got a job from a poor guy?"
What happens when your employer has to pay more on taxes?
Where does your employer get his salary from?
Is your employer in business to give you a job or to make himself a living?
If your employer’s costs go up, who will he fire first: You or Himself?
“There Is No Urgency For All These Matters”
What planet are you living on?
People need to know what they tax rate will be ASAP.
We need to keep the current tax structure in place at least for 2 years, preferably more.
An unemployment extension is needed or you will have millions with zero spending power....and others, who are worried about the jobs they hold, will now be worried about no saftey net for THEM should they lose their.
There could not be a time which necessitated more urgent thinking, and you make the claim there is no urgency. What a joke.
There. Fixed it.
A lot of us worked very hard on the last election and we took back the house. Thanks for nothing.
This just guarantees a massive tax hike for everyone, and that it will be blamed on the GOP.
And your answer is more gov’t spending. That’s what unemployment benefits are. Gov’t spending.
The reason to not dive headlong into this has NOTHING TO DO WITH TAX CUTS. It’s about the effort to ROB the new Tea Party folks taking seats from HAVING ANY POWER TO STOP SPENDING.
You stop spending COLD if you refuse the DEBT CEILING INCREASE. Boehner is trying to get that put into negotiations so the new Congress will have its hands tied.
