Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said today that if his children walked the streets of Phoenix they might look awfully suspicious to police. His wife Columba is from Mexico.
Harvard professor Robert D. Putnam told the same crowd of city officials from across the country at the Denver Convention Center that his grandchildren might likewise draw suspicion. His daughter married a Latino man, he said.
"I think it's not right that they could be picked up just because of the way they look," Putnam said.
Bush and Putnam spoke and then fielded questions at a National League of Cities convention about immigration issues including the controversial Arizona immigration law.
The law aims to detain, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants. The federal government has won an injunction blocking parts of the law, including a section requiring police to question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally. Arizona has appealed.
A group of conservative lawmakers in Colorado is considering introducing an Arizona-style immigration bill in the legislature in January.
Bush, the brother and son of former Republican presidents, quipped that it was obvious he was not running for office, noting that his views differed from most of his Republican colleagues.
While he is sympathetic to the plight of Arizona officials forced to deal with all the problems linked to a porous frontier, he believes there are solutions other than a law criminalizing illegals, he said.

More proof America has had enough of this family.
The Bush clan jumped the shark a long time ago.
Perhaps Jeb should speak of how he wished to be a “conscientous objector” during the Vietnam War, when his father was in Congress and voting pro-war. But then again, who expects a Bush to be consistent about much of anything?
Utter pap and nonsense. Suspiciousness is based on behavior (erratic driving, for instance) not appearance. Jeb's argument is the remark of a propagandist who has nothing of substance to put forward.
FU Jeb, you incompetent hack
“Get out the Bushes” “Get out the Bushes”!
Given his daughter’s history of drug use and abuse perhaps Jeb has it right! She would be looked upon with suspicion.
Illegals criminalized their way to their own status. Such an oxymoron.
LIARS
Nobody is going to be bothered unless they are already doing something they aren’t supposed to be doing.
My wife is morena and you can't tell what country she's from by looking at her, only you know it ain't local. Her accent is so heavy while I have no problem with it, it can be a challenge for some who aren't exposed to Spanish accents.
She has never had an issue here in the Phoenix area.
he was a good gov but its time to move on
Jeb Bush has a wife and daughter who cant seem to abide by the laws of the land
Jeb, FAIL! GO away RINO.
Please, no more Bushes. I hope we never have the misfortune of having Jeb run for President, or his son George P run for anything, unless it’s as a Democrat, which he probably would do if the GOP doesn’t pander to latinos like his uncle W did.
The linked article is typical of the type of bias the media has on immigration. I mean, yes, the media is obviously biased towards the Left, but when it comes to immigration, they are hopelessly biased. It gives the last word to Robert Putnam. He pulls out a standard piece of nonsense used often by the pro-unending mass immigration crowd when he talks about how Benjamin Franklin once warned us about Germans. Since Franklin was wrong about that, the flawed logic goes, then so to today are immigration skeptics wrong about the influx of Hispanics.
But in fact Franklin wasn’t proven wrong. The influx of Germans he was speaking of did not continue. It came to an end. The situation facing us today is of an unending influx that will not end unless we pass restrictive laws and end extended family chain migration. This tired argument by pro-mass immigration types never addresses this inconvenient bit of history - all past waves of immigration came to an end! That they came to an end was one of the main reasons why assimilation was able to eventually work.
And it should be noted that Robert Putnam spent years doing a paper on the Western world’s official religion, that of course being Diversity. The results were not what he, as a Harvard academic, expected or wanted them to be. His research found that Diversity is not in fact our greatest strength (something most people know without an academic study to tell them so), that it comes with downsides (duh) and can lead to less civic engagement among other things. But as a right-thinking, Diversity-worshipping liberal, he felt to the need to delay the release of his findings until he could develop ideas about how to make Diversity triumph over its pitfalls.
On the National Geographic Channel show Border Wars last night, they arrested a guy for nothing more than "driving while Hispanic" and arranged for his deportation.
In Florida.
How is the supposedly draconian Arizona law any different from what the Feds are legally doing (albeit half-heartedly) in your own state right now, Jeb?
Harvard professor Robert D. Putnam ... [said] his grandchildren might likewise draw suspicion. His daughter married a Latino man, he said.
"I think it's not right that they could be picked up just because of the way they look," Putnam said.
Jeb Bush is an IDIOT!. Robert Putnam is an IDIOT.
Two more idiots who have obviously not read the proposed law. If they had, they would have discovered that the "illegal alien" ID check can come only AFTER a stop for some other offense.
It’s obvious that Jeb hasn’t read SB1070 to say what he said.
One has to come afoul of the Law for a criminal offense for the SB1070 to go in effect to allow Legal status questions, or are your kids JEB shiplifters and hooligans to make you worry about SB1070.
Otherwise Jeb, SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE!!!! Jeb, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
