Air force investigating flyover at football game

Four pilots at Vance Air Force Base in Enid are under investigation to determine if they flew too low over Kennick Stadium in Iowa before the Hawkeyes played Ohio State back in November.

"The gentlemen involved are instructor pilots and part of this was a training mission," said 1st Lt. Katherine Roling.

Although the fly over was authorized, pilots with the Air Force are required to fly at least 1,000 feet above congested areas such as a sports stadium.

Nearly two weeks after the flyover, the Air Force is still trying to determine exactly how low the pilots flew.

Since the game, several cell phone videos of the flyover have been posted on the internet and debated.

"Those guys are good and they know what they are doing or they wouldn't be doing what they are doing," said Pilot Lonnie Gillespie who flew in the Korean and Vietnam Wars

Many times in Europe I was minding my own business in some Army helicopter going somewhere on IFR (I follow roads). At one time or another, every fast mover in the NATO inventory would pay a visit. They had advanced radar and IFF, so they knew that we were a military aircraft. We had eyeballs.

They would come screaming in on the deck and come right across our nose. You could read the pilots name on his helmet. They thought it great fun.

Well if it was radar from Vance where the pilots were from then maybe ... depends if it was terminal radar or search radar - or height finding ... then too, how far away is Vance from the stadium ... lots of factors there ... too low and they wouldn’t show up on the screen ...I think the pilots would have to fess up ...

I agree. They mentioned that there was video taken.Maybe they can judge the height and distance of the plane from the video.

No kidding. I live just outside Detroit Metro Airport, and the B-24’s fly over occasionally while I'm working in my garden. COOL!

Perhaps ... lots of angles and vectors to calculate ... bottom line is: are they out to get the pilots or not ...

I didn’t realize that the Air Force still had T-38s in their inventory. I knew NASA still used them as chase planes, but I thought that was it.

"I hate pilots. "

I love em. Had a couple zoomies chase each other over us today and one came back around and gave a wing waggle to our waves. Not saying where but I could see helmets from the ground. Nothing like it to to get your heart rate up. Better than coffee!

then too, how far away is Vance from the stadium

Vance AFB is in Oklahoma. Kinnick Stadium is in Iowa.

I.e., roughly 700 miles.

The USAF still uses them.Besides the USAF,the USN and NASA, other T-38 operators include the German Luftwaffe, the Portuguese Air Force, the Republic of China Air Force, and the Turkish Air Force. There are a few out there that are owned by civilians. There is supposed to be a replacement soon.

Your link is greatly appreciated... it led to others and one in particular has a gentleman screaming YEEAAH twice as the jets approach, still out of the viewers eyeshot. Makes you proud to be an American!

Hmmph...back home in Appalachia, I’ve actually stood on mountain tops and looked DOWN into the cockpits of military jets zooming down below me in the valleys, playing hide and seek with each other. The USAF brass has better things to do here...

My favorite was about 12 years ago during our 4th of July show at our rural airport. Airforce from Edwards came over very low, about 300 feet before shooting off into the sky just as a 55 gallon drum of jet fuel was ignited on the ground. It was like a bombing run! What a blast (no pun intended).

pilots would come screaming over the beach on Grande Island

Kid Sampson didn't think it was so great and look what happened to McWatt. Doc Daneeka was definitely a victim too.

We all know T-38s are really good at nailing Womp Rats on Tatooine...

(seriously, T-38s are a great training and support MRF)

This will be much ado about nothing...
