Obama will be speaking to the nation shortly to put the best spin on his caving in to the Republicans on extending the Bush tax rates. The cable networks are standing by to cover it live.
Here's a teaser from CNN on the deal:
President Barack Obama presented congressional Democratic leaders Monday with a proposed deal with Republicans that would extend Bush-era tax cuts for two years and unemployment benefits for 13 months while also setting the estate tax at 35% for two years on inheritances worth more than $5 million, a senior Democratic source told CNN.
The deal also includes a temporary 2% reduction in the payroll tax to replace Obama's "making work pay" tax credit from the 2009 economic stimulus package for lower-income Americans, the senior Democratic source said. As currently crafted, the deal would prohibit amendments by either party, according to the source, who spoke on condition of not being identified by name.

According to the senior Democratic source, Obama and Biden told the congressional Democrats that the proposed deal was the best they could expect.

Unemployment insurance rates are going through the roof, even for those of us who haven’t laid anyone off. Guess what all those taxes do... make it so employers can’t hire. But that’s okay, the government will just extend benefits another year....and the rates skyrocket again.....and so on.....

I have to say this is the best decision Obama has made; he has conceded so many fundamental conservative principles, especially that tax increases HURT the economy.
I’m not happy with 13 months of unemployment checks, but will see what the Republicans say about it and what the deal actually says.
What momentum of what recovery and what jobs?

don’t believe it. behind the door, they all want to extend the tax rates, they just don’t want to go on record because the commies they lied to don’t like being lied to. They will be touting their vote for this in 2012 once the unemployment dips below 8%.
I propose that the IRS place a line on the tax forms to include any extra contribution democrats want to make, especially the ones that feel they are taxed too little.
That means they would actually have had to grow some balls.
