Armed services are urged to stock kitchens with Gulf seafood

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who doubles as President Barack Obama's point man on Gulf Coast oil spill recovery, is pressing America's armed services to consume as much Gulf seafood as possible.

Navy Capt. Beci Brenton said Monday that Mabus has talked with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the secretaries of the Air Force and Army, and his staff has talked to the Defense Commissary Agency, which operates a worldwide chain of stores for military personnel, making the point "that we should be buying Gulf Coast seafood."

In a meeting Monday with Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, Mabus reaffirmed his commitment to using the tools at his disposal to help the Gulf seafood industry recover from the damage the BP oil spill has done in reality and perception. The board is gearing up for a large-scale national marketing campaign, with $30 million in BP money and millions more in federal dollars, to reassure restaurants and markets across the country that Gulf seafood is safe.

"He expressed what we wanted to hear: He is in favor of the federal government buying seafood from the Gulf," said Smith, who said he would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, "whether it's the military or prison systems or school systems."

I would.

If the demand for Gulf seafood drops, the price will drop.

If the quality is OK (and I assume that it is), it will be a good buy (same quality, lower price).

Stock away!

If the Govt was really serious about helping out Louisiana they wouldn’t have shutdown oil drilling.

obama has a “point man” on Gulf Coast recovery?
That is news to me. Why the Navy Secretary?

Who has a very unfortunate name, BTW

There was an article a while ago about hydrocarbons in the shrimp being at incredibly unsafe levels - but it disappeared and good luck in finding it anywhere...Big Bro and Sis have supprssed it well

But seriously, who wouldn’t want to dine on Gulf shrimps and oysters- nature’s very own sewage filters? Bon Appetit.

Same whiners who will charcoal grill their meat and fish over open flames. Infusing it with all that carbon, smoke containing vast amounts of carcinogins, makes it tasty.

But go near a gulf shrimp cocktail? Hell no!?

That is completely over blown. You have to completely char the meat and be exposed to massive doses for it to even register.

Imagine the paradox if they were to discover that hydrocarbons bond with heavy metals in fish, allowing their metabolism to rid accumulated levels of mercury in tuna?

There is not a thing wrong with it. There was a thimble full of oil in a swimming pool and it is long gone. Americans are idiots.

Merry Christmas

I did the calculations once and that's about right even for the worst estimates for the spill.

At least our military can make some decisions for themselves. Calls to Home-school in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ...

Is it safe to eat? Don’t know. But I do know this: Barack Obama would serve arsenic to our men and women in uniform if he could get away with it.
