'Vandals have hacked at the heart of Christianity'

2,000-year-old Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury is cut down

Vandals have destroyed one of the most celebrated Christian pilgrimage sites in Britain and chopped down a tree said to have sprouted from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea 2,000 years ago.

The Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury, Somerset, is visited by thousands every year to pay homage and leave tokens of worship. Those visiting today were moved to tears on finding the tree cut to a stump.

The sacred tree is unique in that it blossoms twice a year - at Christmas and Easter - and sprigs taken from the thorn are sent to The Queen each year for the festive table.

As another poster commented, take cuttings and plant them in hidden places.

Shades of the White Tree of Gondor.

I agree that it is just a tree. But make no mistake that the attack was not against the tree itself.

If it is at all like “thorn” trees on my property, they grow right back. They didn’t tear out the roots — they “heavily pruned” it.

It’s offensive and outrageous, but I’ll bet that a new tree will sprout from the roots by June.

Probably a pretty good chance that Tolkien was familiar with the tree and the Cromwell story.

One poster explicitly blames a local real estate developer for the destruction. If so, this is a highly charged conflict of a different kind.

Probably the true reason when it finally comes out.

It’s not Biblical. Don’t make an idol out of a tree.

There's nothing wrong with it. A relic or artifact merely provides a connection to a long past event. It's evidence-- a physical representation of history that has lasted through centuries. Nobody is worshipping it.

It's one thing to read a story about something that existed centuries ago. It's quite another to actually be able to go there and touch a piece of it. It true of any historical artifact.

Somehow I suspect he wasn’t a fan of Cromwell or the Roundheads.

The heart of Christianity is Jesus Christ, and no vandal can harm Him.

You can’t have anything enjoyable and meaningful around Muslims, although this is something I wouldn’t put past pop culture in general.

They didn't worship the tree. The tree was, according to legend, planted by Joseph. It's something spiritual.

Please avoid the religious strawman arguments.
