A 23-year old, poverty-stricken young woman who appeared in newspapers and on TV around the world when she was filmed by a cameraman inside North Korea died of starvation in October, it has been revealed.
The woman, who appeared in a KBS special program, North Koreas Third Generation Succession: Who Is Kim Jong Eun? alongside global media including the BBC(UK) and Asahi TV(Japan) amply demonstrated the dire straits in which some North Korean people live. Reduced to rags following the death of both her parents, she said she wandered the fields looking for grasses.
Speaking with the cameraman, who asked what she planned to do with the grass, the girl, who admitted that she also slept outside, said, Im going to eat it.
Speaking with The Daily NK today, Asia Press said, According to Kim Dong Cheol, who interviewed the girl in South Pyongan Province while he was doing some research inside North Korea in June, she died on or around October 20th.
It was discovered that, without a home, she had been wandering in the market and on the streets, before dying in a corn field, the Asia Press spokesperson explained, Since then was harvest time, she went there to eat corn but seems to have died of starvation.
Her body was apparently already decomposing by the time it was found, but the local Peoples Safety Ministry agents were in no hurry to deal with it because she did not have any family, so it was left for a long time.
According to Asia Press, The chaotic situation caused by the currency redenomination in November last year has caused an increase in kotjebi numbers across the country, and in some regions there have been people dying of starvation. She was also a victim of that impractical plan.
The woman in the photo is basically homeless. She(or her family) does not own the plot. She is relegated to picking grass outside the field. I doubt that she is allowed to pick crops in the field, since there are many such wandering N. Koreans, and most are barely getting by.
When you go into a village/region where everyone is starving, you cannot feed all of them so you end not feeding any of them.
They are all blaming the USA. In particular, the bombing by the USA allegedly destroyed the farmland and makes it unfit for farming.
Now, instead of helping the DPRK, the USA is printing more money. This makes it the target of derision all across Asia, not just in communist Asia. Being a warmonger is one thing, I suppose, but being responsible for diluting the paper money supply affects and angers virtually everyone.
True but I have also seen my share of poor in SK as well. Living in mud huts with thatched roofs. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand the plight of NK but every society has it’s share of homeless, hungry and wandering people. Funny that here in the US we eat 3-4 times more food than we actualy need to stay healthy.
>>Im just sayin, it takes alot for someone to actualy starve to death.<<
That’s true but when people become scavengers they end up with worms and viruses that attack their organs and immune system. When the end comes, it’s like running out toilet paper, happens too fast.
You know how liberals are - these camerafolk were obviously angling for a free stay at one of North Korea's government run health spas for themselves and their families (and a couple following generations thereof). Nothing but parasites, happy to let hard working North Korean taxpayers pay for their room and board while they live lives of pampered leisure.
There was 4 months between the interview and approximate time of death. They probably gave her what they could. The camera was an undercover camera. She did not know she was being filmed. Was reported in another article if not here.
If we are ever able, by the grace of god, to liberate the concentration camps where the crazy Kims keep all the sane
people of North Korea..... We WILL find horrors that are the equal of or exceed Nazi Germany.
Guaranteed.
The crimes committed in those places, against whole families, and multiple generations will make Saddam Hussein look like
Mother Theresa.
Perhaps they did. She was interviewed in June and died in October.
For all we know, she may have been given a full two months worth of food. How many pounds of food is that? Sixty pounds of rice, let's say, just to pick a number.
How much food did the interviewer have? Even if the interviewer had 600 pounds of food to give her, would you expect that she would eat while others around her starve? Or would she share with the ten people she most cared about?
Even if she chose not to share, others may have taken her food by force. Whatever the case, it is easy to imagine that any food she got would last only two months. That would leave two months of starvation to end her life.
Most Americans are very ignorant of just how much work goes into creating the immense amount of food that we assume will always be in our supermarkets. Those same Americans are constantly supporting policies which threaten the ability to create and deliver that food at prices almost everyone here can afford.
I truly believe that what happens in North Korea CAN HAPPEN HERE! It only requires that we adopt their practices.
When i look at that I can’t keep the image of Jabba-The-Hut out of my mind......
Those tending the field in the background could be comparable to those you used to saw living in thatched huts. They basically have their own plot, while destitute. We wish that her case is a rare exceptional case which can also occur in a normal country. The trouble is that there are way too many of them in N. Korea. There are many N. Korean people living at the margin heading for their death by starvation. However, regime diverts food aid for military reserve, and rest are sold at high price in the market. This wretched condition is totally state-induced. If they let aid go directly people, we won't see such woman wandering. They will be at some camps or shelters getting their daily meal. This situation does not have to happen. It is all due to the regime's insane priorities. Nuke and missile first, ordinary people last.
If you don’t work for The Party, you don’t eat.
Very fitting. The sooner the Pyongyang regime falls the better.
Too bad she came back stateside.
It makes me sick, they always say they don't want to "get involved in the story."
>> WHY THE HELL DIDNT THE NEWSPEOPLE WHO INTERVIEWED HER FEED HER?
Kinda’ makes the argument for carpet bombing NK less attractive doesn’t it?
The plight of starvation in N.Korea is far beyond homeless, hungry wandering. International help groups have tried many times to get foods to these people but the Korean Gov. will not comply unless they themsleves can distribute it. The Help angencies know fully well the food never gets to the people, rather is distributed to feed the elits and the military. Therefore food has become a bargaining tool....basically either send us the food or take the blllame for the starvation of those in the countryside...who will not get it anyway.
Their leadership has “praised” those who have given their life..(starved to death) for their country. Another propoganda idea fed the people who believe this...
The Internationsal Leaders do not want to see another run in starvation as was in the nineties...millions died...but they already have seen evidence starvation is currently happening yet again.
On the other hand S.Korea has the means to feed their poor and do...regardless of the roof over their heads they are not starving in the hundreds as in N.Korea.
