Awareness of Salvia--another drug or "“psychotomimetic” promoted by a singer, songwriter- this time Miley Cyrus[if sources are correct]. Fans may want to emulate.

Some facts on Salvia:

NIDA InfoFacts: Salvia

Salvia (Salvia divinorum) is an herb common to southern Mexico and Central and South America. The main active ingredient in Salvia,is a potent activator of kappa opioid receptors in the brain. These receptors differ from those activated by the more commonly known opioids, such as heroin and morphine... ingested by chewing fresh leaves or by drinking their extracted juices.. can be smoked as a joint, consumed in water pipes [popular], or vaporized and inhaled. Although Salvia currently is not a drug regulated by the Controlled Substances Act, several States and countries have passed legislation to regulate its use. The Drug Enforcement Agency has listed Salvia as a drug of concern and is considering classifying it as a Schedule I drug, like LSD or marijuana.

People who abuse salvia generally experience hallucinations or “psychotomimetic” episodes (a transient experience that mimics a psychosis). Subjective effects have been described as intense but short-lived, appearing in less than 1 minute and lasting less than 30 minutes. They include psychedelic-like changes in visual perception, mood and body sensations, emotional swings, feelings of detachment, and importantly, a highly modified perception of external reality and the self, leading to a decreased ability to interact with one's surroundings. This last effect has prompted concern about the dangers of driving under the influence of salvinorin.

In 2009, NIDA’s Monitoring the Future Survey of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders asked about salvia abuse for the first time—5.7 percent of high school seniors reported past year use (greater than the percent reporting ecstasy use).

Thanks to YouTube [and 5 minute use timeframe], many young people from ages 16 - 25 have jumped in the bandwagon to get high with salvia and post the video on YouTube. Just like the old YouTube trend, 2Girls1Cup, many older teens have started to become highly interested in this legal drug. Marijuana, [CLAIMED]a harmless drug, is illegal while Salvia is sold online or just about any other smoke shop.

Cost: $4.18/g.Salvia extract.

Salvia will not show up on any drugs test unless it is specifically requested--use within 72 hours. Juvie Probation question on Yahoo

17 states have passed laws regulating salvia divinorum, most of them with outright bans on its possession and distribution. Now, two more states, Maryland and Minnesota, are poised to join them, the former with legislation limiting its possession to adults and the latter with an outright ban.

They’re shutting down head shops in the Tampa Bay area that sell “K2,” which I believe is salvia or a derivative. It’s been selling like crazy, and people get high on it quite often.

Having been a pot smoker in the past, I think I would prefer to stick with the illegal stuff. Who finds these drugs anyway? Do hippies go into the forests of Costa Rica with a bong and just pick, pack, and fire it up to see if it gets them high?

Those advocating consideration of Salvia divinorum's potential for beneficial use in a modern context argue that more could be learned from Mazatec culture, where Salvia is not really associated with notions of drug taking at all and it is rather considered as a spiritual sacrament. In light of this it is argued that Salvia divinorum could be better understood more positively as an entheogen rather than pejoratively as a hallucinogen.[32] Other entheogenic plants with continuing traditions principally of spiritual use include peyote (and other psychoactive cacti), iboga, virola, ayahuasca (an admixture of plants containing DMT + MAOI), and various types of psychoactive fungi.[33] In fact, US legislation as it stands specifically allows two of these to be used in a spiritual context. The Native American Church is allowed to use peyote and Uniao do Vegetal (or UDV) is permitted ayahuasca. Although not consistently granted (varying from state to state), the principal grounds for such concessions are constitutional, with further grounds following from the Regious Freedom Restoration Act.

Who gives a burp in a windstorm about celebrities who take up destructive lifestyles?

They have the world handed to them on a silver platter and end up abusing their gifts and good fortune.

Let them all OD and end up in padded rooms.

That was not the point of the posting of this story. It was just an awareness post/videos about Salvia, which some parents may not be aware of.

I don't really care personally that Miley allegedly partook of Salvia; but she is someone's daughter [not just a celebrity] that I am sure after the media story, would care..AND all parents today can remain "sleepless" worrying about their kids.

Do you happen to have any info on the smoking of Melissa (Lemon Balm)? We order Melissa Essential Oil which is "an investment," but works like a charm for vertigo and angst, etc., and we also have tons of Lemon Balm growing naturally (it's downright invasive almost) in our yard, and I thought we could put it to good use, as long as it wasn't detrimental in any way (other than the obvious smoke-in-the-lungs). I could only find one article online about it, and it mentioned it was legal to smoke, but that it would be harsh on the throat, and should be mixed.

U.S. Military Is Salvia legal in the U.S. Navy? Salvia divinorum is on the list of banned substances for the U.S. Navy, but is not tested for in drug tests

Is Salvia legal in the U.S. Marines? According to Marine Corps News, the use of Salvia divinorum for "intoxication, excitement, or stupefaction" is prohibited under the same rules as those for the U.S. Navy.

According to Army Times, an Air Force spokesperson stated that "the Air Force has no official policy on" Salvia divinorum. Officials at Hill and Malmstrom Air Force Bases have banned the use of Salvia divinorum.

I can’t think of anythign she has done that’s really bad tho I know she has done a couple of things people have made a bigger deal out of than needed. I will wait and see if she turns out bad before I judge her, she hasn’t done anything yet to make me think she’s bad, whorish or anything else negative. California: Assembly Member Anthony Adams (R) introduced Assembly Bill 259 to the California State Legislature on February 5, 2007. On March 12, 2007, the bill was amended to include Salvinorin A. On March 27, 2007, it was defeated by committee vote, but a reconsideration was granted.

Assembly Bill 259

The bill was amended on January 7, 2008. Instead of placing Salvia divinorum in Schedule I, the amended version would make the sale or distribution of Salvia divinorum or Salvinorin A, or any substance or material containing Salvia divinorum or Salvinorin A, to any person under 18 years of age a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not more than 6 months. The amended version passed unanimously in the Assembly on January 29, 2008. It passed in the Senate on July 2, 2008. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) signed the bill into law on July 22, 2008. It went into effect on January 1, 2009.[Cyrus lives in LA] Delaware: Senator Karen E. Peterson (D) introduced Senate Bill 259 to the Delaware State Legislature on March 16, 2006. This legislation makes Salvia divinorum a Schedule I controlled substance in Delaware. The bill passed the General Assembly and was signed into law by Governor Ruth Ann Minner (D) on May 2nd, 2006.

The text of the bill only mentions Salvia divinorum, and not Salvinorin A or any other specific chemical constituents of the plant. The law has been named "Brett's Law" in memory of Brett Chidester, a 17-year-old Salvia user who committed suicide on January 23, 2006, by intentionally poisoning himself with carbon monoxide

Not proud about it, FRiend. Pot ruined my life for several years, and I am adamantly opposed its use now.

What I meant was that in a choice between the two, I would rather use the pot. Salvia has some side effects and anecdotal instances of severe physiological reactions that I would rather not play with.

Again, I don’t support the use of either.

This is actually a pretty big story. Miley Cyrus' use will bring this drug and others like it to the attention of high school kids and automatically create a market.

And the fact that ayahuasca is legal in UDV and Santo Dieme rituals makes the drug all the more attractive to some.

Funny thing about its availability too...it's produced (DMT, that is) by many, many plants. The acacia comes to mind...DMT was extracted from acacia roots and leaves by ancient Egyptians and even Sumerians. Even the MAOI's needed to prevent DMT from being metabolize too fast are an active ingredient in plants like Syrian rue and turmeric.

Wow, now that's interesting! Where were these doctors when I was spending month-long visits at Northwestern Memorial in Chicago with vertigo?

I figured out the vertigo/lemon balm thing by reading up online after receiving YL's oregano oil for strep, and lavender for angst and burns. Those worked so incredibly well, I purchased their Melissa Essential Oil for vertigo as well. Outstanding stuff! Since it's therapeutic (which the stuff at health food stores are not), you can take it in a gelatin capsule.

So if you ever have any further issues (and I hope you don't), the oil, while expensive, is highly concentrated and does the trick! And you only need a couple/three drops of it per day (has approx. 85 drops per bottle).

Cheap too...I threw in the Juvie question to Yahoo would salvia show up in his drug testing..time frame..and specific test for recreational drug used banned in the Juvie program.

Kids are so stupid putting things on line. Many users are worried the YouTube postings will make it more difficult to get and will probably push the price up more. Supply and Demand. Yes, the story on Miley will spur on a new sense of adventuresome to impressionable younger kids to be cool will check it out.

Think Taylor Swift has taken the fans from Miley now. Once you're up and then you're yesterdays news, today's news only if you're bad!

I worry about this kind of drug because it dangerous for the very reason the occult is dangerous...it has a spiritual angle.

In fact, I remember reading somewhere a comment by an exorcist who thought that this dimensional door kind of hallucinogen could lead to the kind of trouble he specializes in. Kids embark on a quest to see God and they end up bumping into someone malevolent.;-)

Yeah, and you can get the same effect as smoking Jimson Weed or Belladonna by smoking tomato or potato plants or any other member of the Nightshade family.

If somebody tells Miley that the reason it’s called “Belladonna” is because upper-class ladies in the Middle Ages used it to dilate their pupils (the Liv Tyler “beauty” effect) and that the reason it was dilating their pupils is because it was turning their minds into oatmeal, she will probably try to OD on it.

Billy Ray would have a lot more of his daughter’s money to go through if he would just cut to the chase: buy her a surfboard, a .357 magnum, and teach how to blow her brains out offshore while hangin’ ten. Automatic burial-at-sea with no mess and exotic food for the fishies. Waste of a good handgun, though.

These people make me sick...
