Conservatives Peeved After GOP Taps 'Prince of Pork' to Lead Spending Committee

Republicans who captured the House last month in part on the strength of a promise to rein in government spending have tapped a veteran lawmaker known as the "prince of pork" to head the powerful House Appropriations Committee. And the decision's not sitting so well among some conservatives.

Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers, who earned the "pork" nickname by steering hundreds of millions of federal dollars to projects in his rural district in Kentucky over a 30-year career in Congress, will chair the 60-member Appropriations Committee, the panel responsible for disbursing more than $1 trillion in non-entitlement-program dollars every year.

Rogers beat two other House veterans with a history of securing earmarks, or special projects, for their districts -- former committee chairman Jerry Lewis of California and Jack Kingston of Georgia. All three campaigned for the position by vowing to carry out the GOP's pledge to ban earmarks and stressing that they were the best man to realize Republicans' election promises to drastically slash federal spending.

The “good ol’ boys” of either party HAVE to be rooted out if the Republic is to be saved.

Peeved ?

Not by a long shot. But I understand, the use of all the good adjectives are prohibited.

We need to get to the point where we get ANGRY whenever some city we don’t live in and will never visit is gifted with our tax dollars to build something we will never see any benefit from.

We need to get to the point were we are EMBARRASSED when our city accepts tax dollars extorted from people we will never meet and who will never get any benefit from our good fortune.

I just tried to call Boehner’s office; lines are busy and then, when you get through, his mail box is full. I guess We The People are questioning his “lack” of spine, guts, and gonads. Apparently, Boehner (and the rest of the gutless GOP) was too busy crying on November 2nd, to get We The People’s message! No compromise with the enemies within this Regime and this Congress.

Rush just basically said the same thing.

They hope to wear us down. We voted SOME of them out, not a lot of progress yet, and we need to DOUBLE DOWN.

2010 election was great but we’ve got lots more housecleaning in our own party to do in the next election. It all starts in the primaries in 2012 to weed out the RINO’s and elites. They won’t change so we have to change their address right out of office.

You have a good screen name for the leadership.

Of the three, Jack Kingston of Georgia should have gotten the job.

The leadership is deaf. We voted TEA Party conservative and we damn well expect TEA Party-type conservatives to chair committees, and to hell with seniority and that good-old boy nonsense.

Y’all are on probation, congressional Republicans. You are being watched carefully. Cross conservative America at your peril. You’ve been warned.

I think the Republicans are going the way of the Whigs. I don’t think we can revitalize the dead elephant.

"American families heard a lot of Republican rhetoric about fiscal responsibility and reining in debt this election season, but now they're faced with the choice of the 'Prince of Pork' to head their appropriations process," said Ryan Rudominer of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Rep. Rogers' record on fiscal responsibility looks like a shopping spree -- no splurge left behind."

I hope the Democrats attack this move hard. I'm not going to protect these establishment Republicans from abuse they deserve even if Democrats are hypocrits on the issue too. If they get hit by Democrats, if they are hit by rank and file Republicans, if they are hit by Independents then that leaves them no room for cover. I want every move scrutinized. It might force them to go against their inclinations and do the right thing in spite of themselves. If not...primary these guys.

It is because the powered elite don't see the world the same way the TEA party activists do. They are not trying to betray anything, they just don't have the world view that sees such things as bad.

The top level politicians on both sides have a very narrow spread of world experience. They differ many on implementation, not ideas or beliefs.
