The number of people on food stamps keeps hitting new all-time highs; as of September, nearly 43 million people were using the program, according to figures out this week.
Of course, because of population growth, absolute numbers only tell part of the story. The best way to look at the numbers over a long period of time is as a percentage of the population. And when you do that, you see that we're also hitting new highs.

The article states the threshold is about $29,000 per year for a family of four.
Dang I see that ALL the time. Why do you need food stamps if you are obese? Can't the have weigh-ins or something? As in no qualification for food stamps until you are less a specified body mass index?
Giving food stamps to an obese person is like handing a fifth of whiskey to a drunk. It's going to kill them quicker.
Food stamp recipients = thieves.
I once got into an argument with someone in the online chat section of a very popular online computer game. This person indicated that they used food stamps. When I asked why/how they were online playing a computer game - which requires a pretty decent computer, the purchase of the game, a high-speed internet connection, and a $14 per month subscription - they got terribly indignant, and started saying that I was violating their right to free speech! What?!
They went on to say that they had as much right to "relax" as anyone else, blah, blah, blah. Utterly typical entitlement mentality. Further discussion with this individual was, as you can imagine, entirely pointless.
Well, I could be crass and unsympathetic and say something like, "they'll just download a future dependent or two before they become a medical problem"..... you have to realize, unless it's an out-and-out death dealing heart attack, these heifers can linger on, taxing our medical system, stressing our disability system for a very, very, very long time...all the while living on our tax money.
“Food Stamps” provide all of the groceries for us here in the repeal household.
My son; daughter-in-law; and two grand kids live with me and they qualify.
We’re glad we have them.
But there is something inherently wrong with a program
that lets you buy canned chili, but not toilet paper.
There are two apartment buildings across the street from each other near where I live.
One is Section 8 housing (government assisted). The other is not - just a regular place where you have to pay your own rent.
The Section 8 housing has about twice as many Direct TV satellite dishes than the other complex. I know because I counted them.
I kid you not.
And the other 50% of Americans that voted for Obama. You’re in good company.
They should limit food stamps for 6 months and have the recipient actively job hunting, in a jobs training program, or at the very least volunteering 30 hours a week.
At one time I worked for our County Welfare program, in Food Stamps...eek!
We did not count households, we counted people as the food stamp allotment is figured per person. Example: the case would be Jones but they would be getting $470 a mnth in food stamps since the number in their household was 3.
I doubt if they have changed it.
That is the way it was done when I worked for food stamps. Doubt if they have changed it.
Read Young Rissa, by F.M Busby, for a view of Total Welfare. It seems to be way out of print according to Amazon, but I'm always seeing copies in thrift stores. If you see a copy of Rissa Kerguelen, that's Young Rissa plus 'older Rissa' - that title escapes me at the moment.
Now that's funny.

I am genuinely interested in something, and if you don't want to answer or would prefer to answer privately - either is fine. I don't want to start any flaming and I won't flame.
I am curious on items like multiple cell phones, computers, cable TV subscriptions, cameras, flat screens, - in general - things that some would say are very nice to have, but not necessary to have. Do you have all these things?
Again - please don't answer or answer in private if the question is uncomfortable to you in any way. I have worked my entire life and have never had a need for a program like this. I am genuinely curious.
I just did the online eligibility thing for my state and found out we were probably eligible for food stamps and medical. Not only that, but that we were so bad off they would expided it and send out emergency food stamps. Well, la tee da! No, thanks. It’s a struggle but if we can make it, then others in our situation can as well.
expided = expedite
Blah!
Of course they are.
When I throw bread crumbs on the ground, am I surprised that pigeons follow?
hard to have sympathy on that headline when they are out actively RECRUITING new recipients
Hopenchange!
The Wee Wee is doing for food stamps what he has done for gun sales

One of the very best things that had ever happened in my life was the day some do-gooder came into my then-place of employment and hung up a recruiting poster for the Food Stamp Program. When I read it and realized how close I was to qualifying, it gave me the swift kick in the rear which I needed to get off my butt and go look for a better-paying job.
