Chicago database a tool to discourage gun ownership, not to fight crime(IL)
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 9 December, 2010 | David Codrea

“Mayor Richard Daley expressed frustration today that the Chicago Police Department has not set up a database to let police officers and firefighters know how many firearms are registered in each home in the city,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

“A key piece” in the mayor’s response to a loss in the McDonald case, where the Supreme Court ruled the Second Amendment is applicable against state and local infringements, “[t]he mayor said it would help protect first responders by letting them know what kind of situation they might encounter when they went to calls in Chicago residences.”

That, of course, is nonsense, a cover story for the gullible that masks true intent. This is part of Daley’s revenge for his court loss, an attempt to make things as difficult as he can “legally” get away with, and a way to set traps for gun owners in the bargain.

Illinois law already requires a Firearms Owner Identification Card (FOID), approved and revocable by the Illinois State Police, as a permit to purchase not just handguns, but also rifles and shotguns. Additionally, all purchases require a background check. And the City of Chicago requires all firearms to be registered.

------------------------------cut-----------------------

Which brings us to one more chilling initiative that should illustrate for all to see the mindset of committed statist gungrabbers:

To protect the city against costs for a lawsuit in case a police officer shoots an armed person while responding to a home, Daley also said the city will pursue legislation at the state and federal levels granting liability immunity for first responders and the city.

Just so we’re clear on where this all leads.

Yeah, give these guys a license to kill. What could go wrong?

The database will be used to choose which houses to raid with SWATs. Suitable charges will be contrived and probable cause manufactured. The Mayor will prove that owning guns creates criminals because of all the houses that get raided. The “found” legal guns will be shown smugly to cameras to prove that these people are dangerous criminals.

I totally get what’s horrifically wrong with a state (small “s”) database of gun owners (the state can harrass the owners; should they win a court battle, they know whose weapons to sieze, etc.)... but on the issue of giving a “right to kill,” I actually think this would INCREASE the state’s liability in the event of a shooting death, not decrease it.

If the state knows that a homeowner owns a gun, they have far less grounds for arguing that they confused the lawful homeowner with an armed intruder, that they presumed criminal intent, that they were caught by surprise and made a “reasonable” snap judgment under stress. Even in the event of a two-way gun battle, the state takes on greater liabilities for failing to prevent the situations that lead to such gun battles: if the state knows a homeowner owns a gun, they can reasonably suppose that a sudden, unannounced invasion will result in a gun battle with the state at fault.

So now which houses have illegal guns? Oh, they don’t know that and don’t care. They only want to harass the HONEST LAW-ABIDING citizens who obey the law. Liberalism sux.
