Your assist theory seems plausible. I can’t think of a motive for Mark to kill himself after two years and no immediate threat of prison or anything like that. I don’t know any other details than what is in this thread, but there’s not much here to support a suicide.
According to reports, he sent emails that morning to family & friends - suicide intention emails and asked that they come and take care of his son. That’s why his father-in-law came to his apartment and found him.
In that case it does sound legit. I hope the best for his young child. Thanks for the clarification.

Actually, he has 2 young children. The 2yr old boy was with him and his 4yr old daughter was with his wife at Disney World.
Another reason why he may have decided to kill himself was to protect his wife and children. I would guess Madoff lost money for some bad people. A lot of his regular investors were tax cheating scum like Elie Weisel and many others with their foundations.
If Russian, Israeli or Italian mafia lost money - his wife and kids would be in danger. Also wealthy just slimy clients who were all over the 70 + page pdf list of names probably know criminals and killers. Many rich people do not get rich being nice. I can think of quite a few where the PR does not match what the people are/were really like.
The younger Madoff may have known this. Some people may have said - a coward’s way out but maybe he felt the wife and kids would be safer. We will never know.
One more life that Bernie screwed up. His own son. The son lived the good life, private jets, big homes, expensive vacations. I would be willing to bet at first he thought Dad was a genius. At some point he saw the truth. What to do? Turn in Dad and give up the good life? No he stayed and became a willing accomplice in the scam. He continued to live on money he did not earn. The draw was too strong. He was now looking at the abyss. No job, no money he would be one of the little people. With nothing in his life accomplished or earned he took the coward’s way out. It was the only way in his mind’s eye. Just like his “business” he did not care about the wake of destruction he left behind.
Bernie taught his sons the only thing he was sure of and that was screw everyone else it’s all about you. He didn’t care what he did to people that trusted him but he made the mistake of forgetting his sons trusted him. That trust was sadly misplaced.
If Bernie is human he is now at the worst kind of hell. He didn’t care about the investors but this was his son. He tried to protect them figuring he is old and would take the fall for everyone.
If this world wasn’t so screwed up this would be an excellent “teachable moment”. There are consequences for all your actions. Some might call it Karma. The reasons for living a just life might not be apparent at the time but at some point you will see. Sometimes though it is too late.

Not that it matters, or that anyone should care, I'd bet someone helped him hang. It was justified, and the world will be better to have one less fraudster family member.
This is the way things will go in a world where "justice" has become a mockery against law-abiding, tax-paying citizens.
May all the liars, cheats, thieves, banksters, fraudsters, corrupt politicians and bureaucrats suffer similar or worse fates, and may all their acquaintances shiver in terror of their own impending demise, until the whole of society is cleansed of these evil, destructive scumbags.
