Boehner faces historic decision on 2010 tax-cut Christmas tree
Washington Examiner.com ^ | December 12,1012 | Hugh Hewitt

Boehner is a tough, wily and underestimated son of Ohio, one of 12 children, a product of Catholic schools, a Bishop Moeller Crusader through and through.

He is said to be loyal to his friends and to the traditions of the House, and last week he promoted three long-serving Republicans to the leadership of three committees where various sets of reformers had hoped to see new faces for a new era.

Tea Party activists are outraged and, worse by far, the Pledge to America that Boehner and his colleagues promulgated on a House Web site as binding on the Republicans of the current House seems to be in shreds because of the "tax deal" that turned into a Christmas tree with ethanol and windmills under its branches.

Now Boehner faces a choice. He can in good conscience declare that the deal he agreed to has been buried under a mountain of pork and that, upon further reflection, he ought not to have gone along with it in the first place because of the explicit, specific provisions in the Pledge to America he captained and is now in a position to advance.

Boehner can make a stand as memorable as the one he took on Feb. 13, 2009, when he dropped 1,100 pages of an unread stimulus bill on the floor of the House and denounced the process that produced in near-secrecy such a deficit-driving monster.

There are enormous risks to that course. Markets could be unsettled and even sell off for a few days. The president will denounce Boehner as untrustworthy, and the Washington Post, the New York Times and Politico will repeat the charge without examination of the White House's capitulation to the spending frenzy demanded by Democrats as an additional bit of blackmail necessary to

If he does not scuttle the entitlement/tax bill, the republican party will be competing with a 3rd party in 2012.

It is almost a certainty.

We should rename it “The Christmas Tree Bill.”

I just called Boehner’s DC office to comment on the Tax bill that is full of pork and not what the message sent on November 2nd was about . It became immediately clear that his staffer didn’t want to hear anything I had to say. He cut me off and hung up.

Give it a try yourself at 202-225-3121 ask for Boehner’s office.

This lame duck business is for the birds anyway. After an election, it seems lunacy to let the old crew that has been soundly rejected to stay on for another three months or so to do whatever they please.

Ok all of you boehner supporters... boehner was shown on a clip on abc this morning, where he was crying again... this time in favor of the dream act. Through tears and broken voice he sobbed that we must find a way to allow these illegal children to become citizens... so that they to could have the same chance at the American dream that he had growing up. That is not the man we need as Speaker and I hope his dimrat ways out him and that he loses the vote for his most cherished dream... because his dream will destroy our dream.

It's become abundantly clear that this man is unstable.

He had nothing to do with the tsunami that swept DC in November, and the 80+ new Republicans should not be bound to vote for the old war horse as Speaker. There needs to be someone who is not tied to Washington’s ways. The newbies need to stick together and tell the dinosaurs what’s what.

"If he does not scuttle the entitlement/tax bill, the republican party will be competing with a 3rd party in 2012."

Sir, that statement is as true as the day is long.

There are millions of us that will scuttle the GOP if they sign on to this spending. Millions.

Enough to ensure the loss of the WH, 10 Senate Seats and and 100 house seats.

We'll do it, too.

I believe you are right. And if this goes through (and the Dream Act also appears to be on the verge of passage), the Republicans are toast and the next two years will be spent in the construction of a new political party.
