Blustery storms heading to Northern California (gonna get ugly wet the next few days or so Alert!)

A pair of blustery, soaking storms will stream into Northern California beginning Friday, bringing as much as 10 inches of rain south and east of the Bay Area by Christmas Day and setting up potentially difficult travel conditions for those escaping for the holidays.

Though computer weather models differ on the exact trajectory and strength of the two separate weather systems, meteorologists are bracing for sizable amounts of rain and the possibility that some rivers might overrun their banks.

"No matter how you slice it, it's going to be a significant weather event," said Rob Hartman, lead hydrologist with the National Weather Service's California-Nevada River Forecast Center. "If it comes in heavy and warm, it will be a bigger flood event. But the real wild card is the freezing level."

I spent 4 days this week spreading 3 pickup loads of gravel on the Bender Highway and these storms have the potential to wash that Gold laden gravel into Bender Creek where it will flow into Bender Humboldt Bay.

Did you get the Dungeness Crab I sent Monday?

We have several roadside Crab Stands around Humboldt Bay but the best is Botchie’s in Fields Landing about 3 miles south of the Vast Bender Estate. It was founded by “Botchie” Stacie in 1928 and is still in the family and they use the original “secret” spices and it does make a difference

I live in the Sierra, and at my elevation we are supposed to get ten to twelve inches of rain. It could be an interesting few days.

and they’ve never revealed the secret recipe to Mr. Bender?
PS wonderful that they have kept the business in the family.

Good luck, we are just about to get wet here.. if we get 2 to 3 inches the next week or so, that would be a lot here.. if this is a warmer set of storms, not good..

Here is the latest from the National Weather Service-Reno:

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV 408 PM PST THU DEC 16 2010 ...PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS THIS WEEKEND... .LOW PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHEAST PACIFIC WILL PUSH ABUNDANT MOISTURE INTO THE SIERRA THIS WEEKEND. SNOW LEVELS WILL BE VARIABLE THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND WITH LOWER ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA SEEING RAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EVENT...WITH SNOW ON EITHER SIDE. THE DETAILS FOR SNOW LEVELS IN EACH AREA CAN BE FOUND IN THE STATEMENTS BELOW.

LIGHT SNOW WILL BEGIN THE SIERRA ON FRIDAY MORNING...WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW OCCURRING FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. HOURLY SNOWFALL RATES MAY EXCEED 2 TO 4 INCHES PER HOUR DURING THE STRONGEST PORTION OF THE STORM. 3 TO 8 FEET OF SNOW IS LIKELY IN THE SIERRA ABOVE 7000 FEET...WHICH WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE AVALANCHE DANGER. THOSE LIVING IN REMOTE...HIGHER ELEVATION AREAS IN THE SIERRA COULD BE SNOWED IN FOR MULTIPLE DAYS AND SHOULD PREPARE ACCORDINGLY.

STRONG WINDS WILL ACCOMPANY THIS STORM SATURDAY AND SUNDAY WITH GUSTS OF 50 TO 70 MPH IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS AND WINDS OF 100 MPH OR MORE OVER THE SIERRA RIDGES. THIS WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH WHITEOUT CONDITIONS OVER MOUNTAIN PASSES AND WIND PRONE AREAS.

THE SNOW WILL BE VERY HEAVY AND WET WHICH COMBINED WITH THE STRONG...DAMAGING WINDS COULD DOWN POWER LINES AND TREES. THIS MAY CAUSE WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES ACROSS THE SIERRA.

THE SNOW WILL TURN TO RAIN AT LAKE LEVEL SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT WITH LOCALIZED POOLING OF WATER LIKELY. DEBRIS AND EXCESS SNOW SHOULD BE CLEARED FROM GUTTERS AND DRAINAGES DURING THIS PERIOD TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FLOODING.

CONDITIONS IN THE SIERRA COULD BECOME DANGEROUS THIS WEEKEND DUE TO RAPID SNOW ACCUMULATIONS AND STRONG WINDS. MOTORISTS SHOULD CONSIDER ALTERING PLANS TO AVOID THE DANGEROUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS. TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS ARE LIKELY...WITH ROAD CLOSURES AND LENGTHY DELAYS POSSIBLE. BACKCOUNTY ACTIVITIES IN THE SIERRA ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED THIS WEEKEND.

Why don’t we just build a big wall around it and wait for the rain?

Yeah, it really isn't much to look at, but I'll bet the crab is good.

Nothing to worry about. Blustery storms always come before a major earthquake!

Google earth>eureka ca>6690 Fields landing drive. It parallels the freeway on the west side and there are several good street views there. I’ll take some photos the next time I am out there. No rain here yet but it is from Frisco bay south and I hear Norm’s plea for more beer and cheesy puffs...
