Cop shoots, kills family dog (Golden Retriever)

A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.

But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.

“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”

A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

Sounds reasonable ~ or at least the zap zone is extended ~ a large enough dog running fast enough is going to go right through this thing ~ just like a human being would.

A 300 pound man is not going to be able to stop Fur Shur.

There was no need for the cop to even be there, period.

Where was the officer standing when he fired his weapon?

The doggy jumped off the porch and began running as fast as his widdle legs could take him toward Officer Neckvein who had just under 2 seconds to react to get off a killing round.

Which meant Officer Neckvein was walking around with his pistol drawn so it only took him about 2/5 of a second to react with a killing round ~ the doggy only made it 25 feet!

Officer Neckvein was looking for a meat wagon that may have been parked at this house. Satellite and ground views reveal that NO ONE PARKS in the drive at any home in this development. All the vehicles are parked in the garages or under tarps hidden behind small storage fences concealed under trees and hedge. Of course a meat wagon parked in your drive would be SUSPICIOUS.

THERE WAS NO SIGN SAYING "INVISIBLE FENCE". This is a hoity-toity development that restricts signs!

I'm sure the developer's HOA bylaws and covenants writer didn't think things through to see what happens when you ban both fences and signs. Given the number of swimming pools in this community I'd guess the members pay well more than $238.91 per month HOA fee. They may PAY the police department for EXTRA PATROLS, and odds are that the HOA has a clause in the covenants that allows them to arrange with the cops to enter on the property without notice.

2 acre lots ~ but that doesn't mean their Homeowner's Association doesn't maintain the grounds (hence the NO FENCES rule they obviously have.

Some of these developments come with lawn service, and supplemental policing where the local cops are paid for extra patrols.

Everybody's been assuming these people control their own lawns but that may not be the case.

Did you notice that NO ONE parks outdoors? Strange, right? No fences; park in garage; no meat wagons in driveway?

Sure not where I live!

“Cops have no business on anyone’s private property unless the property owner summoned them or they have a warrant signed by a judge,”

If you’re ever getting assaulted in your house and your neighbor calls the police I hope they respect your wishes.

The guy was responding to a “suspicious person” call and the dog charged at him. Bang. In a similar circumstance a reasonable person would probably have done the same.

Get a life. Drop it.

I disagree strongly with your final assertion, but could not agree more with your tagline. What is up with that?

The cop only had a legit fear if the dog had actually LEFT the home owners property. Shooting from the street ON to the property was the WRONG thing to do no matter how you try and justify it.

The breed of dog, the distance between the two, etc... All add up to BAD SHOOT.

Put the cop back on Mall duty. It's where his trigger happy ass belongs.

Just curious, how do mail carriers survive on a daily basis without opening up on family pets in neighborhoods full of old women and kids?

Don't mail carriers simply carry mace and pepper spray for nuisance dogs and for the safety of the neighborhood?

Sorry. I’m not a big cop fan especially when they shoot family dogs that aren’t being aggressive. But when they drop the hammer on one where I think I would too I have to say something. That gets peoples’ dander up and they attack you like you’re the AntiChrist. On my scale of importance this particular dog-shooting is pretty low.

As for the clock thing, FR is having server issues and one of the symptons is a time mismatch. I’m sure they’re working on it.

I don’t know exactly how close the dog was when the cop shot, but it’s like that knife/21-foot-rule. Dogs are fast and you don’t have time to discern some “invisible fence” collar gizmo.

Sun Tzu turned concubines into disciplined soldiers. I bet I could turn a Golden Retriever into an attack dog.

When it’s your nads the dog is aiming for you may play it any way you wish, of course.

That’s funny....

Border collie?

Nobody can outrun one of those things. They’re essentially perpetual motion machines.

You just can’t wear them out.

When I was a kid, we had friends who had an enormous German Shepard.

When you came to the door, she was on police dog attack mode, like some rabid animal, bristling and growling and lunging at the door like she’d go right through it.

Open the door, and she was under the dining room table, tail between the legs, so fast your head would spin, and she wouldn’t come out until you were gone.

I don’t know, maybe the mail carrier was introduced to the dog under different circumstances and was familiar with the collar gizmo. The cop was summoned with the expectation of trouble related to a “suspicious person.”

When it’s your home/family/life, do you want a post office response or a police response ?

I have a problem with stupid cops shooting dogs that *obviously* are no threat. This situation to me is different.

Dear sweet weeping Jesus on the cross!

Attacker with a knife? Sun Tzu's rules of war? A golden retriever attack dog? You must be one of those that produces these morons at the police academy. All you have to do is stick your foot out, and the worst thing that could happen is it bites your shoe and runs away.

My God, what is happening to our police forces?

If you are not on my property, and my dog never leaves my property, you are in no danger.

And yes, if you are deploying deadly force, you'd damn well better be able to discern the difference or you have ZERO right to be carrying a badge.

Sorry,

Bunch of silliness... A dog comes at you, you back away.. 35 feet away is not IMMENENT threat when you are a human holding a gun.. This officer obviously had time to “order” a dog to stop.. which is amusing on its face.

I am not saying the officer had malicious intent, he most likely didn’t, but he clearly over reacted.. if a dog comes off its porch and you are in the street and the street is 60 feet from the porch, you back away the minute you see the dog coming... My dog which is a BIG golden can cover 60ish feet in a few seconds running full tilt and barking, and this is plenty of time for me or anyone else to react before he reaches them.... Obviously the guy had time to react, he not only ordered the dog to stop but also shot and killed it.. while it was still in its yard.

Now, lets take your hypothesis one step further.. using 35MPH for a dog running full out, which I think is a bit high, given trained greyhounds go about 45 MPH.. I think a golden moving at 35 is probably overestimating.. but we’ll stick with it... Now a human can sprint at 15-20 MPH for short distances, and the fastes ever sprint recorded by a many was about 27 MPH. So, that’s a 10-15 mph differencial... which means backing away, instead of shooting equals about 20 MPH.. which is MORE than enough time to assess a situation when talking about this sort of distance.. it wasn’t a hair trigger moment with only fractions of a second to react.

Again, I don’t think the officer had malace, just the officer either wasn’t familiar with dogs, overreacted or both.

Like I said, I’ve been bit by dogs, I’ve dealt with dogs charging and lunging at me in full trot... I’m know exactly how scary it can be... I also know that Goldens as gentle as they are by nature can certainly look imposing and can do damage like any dog should they choose to do so. With all that being said though, I think this cop did not handle the situation well..

With a gun, you can take out a dog at the last second... they don’t have the capacity to launch projectile weapons at you. I have never ever heard of an incident where a dog beat an armed human.. shooting it when its 25 feet or more away in its own yard barking at you.. is just not something I think can be justified, given no prior history with the dog. Had the dog already mauled a person and was now heading at you, that would change the situation.. but a dog running off of its porch barking at a stranger.. yet is still in its yard... hard to say the cop reacted properly here in my mind.
