Collapse - Republican opposition to New START is collapsing
National Review Online - The Corner ^ | 12/21/10 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 12/21/2010 7:54:11 AM PST by Fury

Republican opposition to New START is collapsing. One Senate source just told me the vote for ratification could go as high as 75. Another said, “I don’t know if it will get that high, but it’s starting to tick up there.” As the sense builds that ratification is inevitable, Republicans are lining up to get on the “right side.” Lamar Alexander’s support, noted below, is a crucial sign of which way the wind is blowing, although he’ll probably be the only member of the Republican leadership to vote for it. At least Jon Kyl was able to get more money for modernization and that letter from President Obama making assurances on missile defense. Otherwise, this is a dismaying rout.

This morning Johnny Isakson (R-GA) announced that he will vote for confirmation of the treaty.

I'm ashamed that I ever voted for that man. I should have known all along that he hasn't changed his political colors, he was always a RINO in GA politics and at the national level he still is. If Herman Cain can't get the GOP presidential nomination I hope he goes for the seat Isakson now holds. Electing a rock-solid conservative black man such as Cain to the US Senate would be the best thing GA could do for the US. Short of electing him president that is.

I believe the post you make reference to was a vanity by ballplayer. I stood against the thread. I now admit my mistake. ballplayer, I ask for your forgiveness.

Understand that someday an administration that takes its national defense responsibilities seriously will have to break this treaty and all that entails.

Mitch McConnell has to change his name to “Bitch” if this is true.

Because he is Obama’s.

There is no reason this treaty vote should take place now. It can wait two weeks until the next Congress is seated.

We need legislation that says that a Lame Duck Congress will pass no legislation unless national security is in imminent danger.

We have Senators voting on this treaty that will not be Senators in two weeks, and after the Congress goes home for Christmas, will no longer vote on any issue.

I don’t know if the GOP can be saved. These RINOs and no-spine Republicans just don’t care enough about my country, and that is becoming increasingly evident.

Since the thread was started by you, I should comment. There was a few threads, by ballplayer, and these points were pointed out and all of what has happened would come to pass due to a deal having been made. ballplayer posted, from what I read at the one thread I saw, plus other threads relating to this subject and ballplayer tried to warn a deal had been made. ballplayer, come on out here and give me my lumps. I humbly await your arrival. I need kicking in the teeth for this mistake. ballplayer, you were correct. I will not ask you how you knew. It is none of my business.

Generals, Diplomats Warn of New START

More than 30 former defense or foreign policy government officials and related experts issued an open letter to the Senate Monday expressing their professional judgment that President Barack Obamas proposed nuclear weapons reduction treaty with the Russians, called New START, is not consistent with the national security interests of the United States, and should be rejected by the U.S. Senate

With liberals running the government, who needs hostile states trying to destroy us?

Why even have two parties in the Senate?

The adults in our nation have grown tired of fighting the children. I’m not talking about age-wise of course. It’s the cooler heads who have finally watched as the idiots among us got what they demanded.

In years to come the rest of us will pay a very heavy price for what the ‘the children’ demanded.

“But this is the result of you getting what you wanted...”

Our future has become very shakey.

Dude, your ignorant use of “neocon” speaks volumes. Which neocon school teaches that we should sh*tcan 70% of what the federal government does and return to strict constitutional conservatism? Which neocon school wants us to get the hell out of the World Bank, the WTO, NAFTA and cut foreign aid down to the bone? Which neocon branch supports my contention that SS and Medicare need to be ditched altogether? Which neocon group is pushing for the re-indutrialization of America instead of the utopian wetdream called “free trade”? And which neocon is out there demanding that we shovel ALL the illegal aliens out the door?

You presume that because I don’t trust Putin or Obama to do ANYTHING in the best interests of the United States, that I’m a neocon? LOL. Try anti-communist.

This thread is filled with premature anger at all Republican office-holders.

At the state level the Tea Party helped the GOP clean up like you wouldn’t believe. Bodes better things for the future. Now that we have hundreds and hundreds more Tea Party endorsed winning candidates at the grassroots level, people here want to run against them and oust them before they get going, because of what the RINO cavers are doing in the Senate lame duck. Huh?

Here’s what’s coming up as soon as the new Senators arrive. In ND, John Hoeven for Byron Dorgan. In Utah, Mike Lee for Bob Bennett. In AR, John Boozeman for Blanche Lincoln. In FL, Marco Rubio for Mel Martinez/George LeMieux. In Indiana, Dan Coats for Evan Bayh. In WI, Ron Johnson for Russ Feingold. In IL, Kirk for Obama’s seat (yes I know he’s RINO). In PA, Toomey for Specter. In MO, Roy Blount for Kit Bond. In KY, Rand Paul for Jim Bunning. In NH, Kelly Ayotte for Judd Gregg.

Already in the Senate we have men like Jim DeMint and Jeff Sessions who are unbelievably stalwart.

The House will have 63 new Reps.

I say if either McConnell or Boehner fall down after the cavalry comes, they will pay for it.

I do realize that not every new Republican will be perfect on every issue. Even Toomey said if he had been there he would have supported the repeal of DADT.

Not often do I agree with Lindsay Graham. But when he said they should have shut down the lame duck after “have to deal with now” issues were dealt with because these people were voted against or were retiring and should not be voting on all this other stuff, I had to agree. No matter who voted how on which matters, the whole thing is a total affront to the voters who spoke in November. And he is right to note that Harry Reid made mincemeat out of Senate Republicans. Just walked all over them, with their help.

I have enough sense not to damn them all but only the ones who clearly, personally deserve it.

I have enough sense to expect we will consolidate the gains we voted for in November, instead of trying to unseat all the people we just now put in all over this nation merely because they ran as Republicans and for no other reason.

What a horrible day (or week, really) for our country. And now the FCC has granted themselves the authority to regulate the internet too. And we have Rush phoning it in and making today Donovan McNabb day. I can’t stand it.

"the best course for Republicans."

Unfortunately, we have approximately 10 RINOs who would rather bee invited to a Rat cocktail party than protect the rights of the people of the United States.

or nonexistent (future) in the not to distant future. The future will not be what I remember of the past. I can see no way this will be possible now. The rule of law is almost gone. The executive, legislative, and the court is ignoring their own decisions, of the past, and now institute new order. I wanted to believe the Republic could stand. There are no guarantees on the Republic standing anymore. So what to do? FCC can shut down anyone they desire? All the scorched earth in the year of 2010 against the Freedoms American have known from the beginning, are nearly dust in the wind. I hang my head in shame. I did not fight hard enough to keep this from taking place.

You are right, they aren’t.

But the leadership of the Republican party is in Congress and selling us out.

Do you expect any different when the young blood comes in?

I don’t.

We didn’t win anything, The Republicans are no better than the Democrats it is only spelled differently.

“...What will happen if China and Russia decide that together they can launch a preemptive nuclear strike...”

Don’t worry. Field Marshall Lamar Alexander has suddenly decided we’ll have enough surviving nukes to blast everybody. What we need is more “transparency”...so there will be no surviving U.S. power.
