German scientists have successfully grown hair follicles from stem cells, and claim it could translate into a cure for baldness in the next five years, BioScholar.com reported.
The stem cells used in the study at Berlins Technical University were taken from animals, but researchers said they hope to use human stem cells within a year.
Professor Roland Lauster said the study could result in a baldness treatment for as much as 80 percent of people who suffer from hair loss.
Since 1950 the number of new chemicals used in cosmetics has risen 500fold, and so has the need for animals to be experimented upon to ensure they are safe for humans, he said. This could well do away with the need for them to suffer.
The University of Pennsylvania discovered similar findings in 2004, but failed to produce a cure for baldness.

Me too! I’ve got snow on the mountain but the snow is melting!
I started losing my hair when I was about 21 or so. EVERYONE seemed to find it the most interesting thing to talk about. My grandmothers in particular, seemed to talk about it a little too much for my taste... Did not make me happy, and people can be rude, but there are worse things to deal with. Still, I miss my hair. If I could afford a cure, I would do it I think.
(in a good way)
I shave my head and love it.
Thank you very much, Liza! Merry Christmas! LOL
Why does Capt Kirk have a Tribble on top of his head? /sarc
Oh baby, baby, I flipped and shaved off all my hair....
In 5 years I could care less, i’ll be damn near 80.
I could care less now!!
There is a gene that causes pattern baldness, which sorts by classic Mendelian principles.
E.g., the cross of parents Bb x Bb (where B is normal hair and b is bald), gives offspring BB, Bb, bB, bb.
In female offspring, the B acts dominant, so BB, Bb and bB offspring all have full hair and bb has pattern baldness.
In male offspring, however, the testosterone makes the b act dominant, so that Bb, bB, and bb all have pattern baldness.
The reason it is said that mothers pass baldness to their sons is because of the testosterone changing the gene expression. Even if the father has a full head of hair, the Bb mother gives that b gene to half her children, and if they are boys, they will develop pattern baldness.
Cure for baldness.....does it work if the guy shaves his head?
Hahahahahaaa ... only on FR :)
“So it is written. So it shall be done”
The problem with only reading half the instructions...shoulda put it on ALL the scalp.
I’ve never lost any of my hair. I’ve taken saw palmetto for prostate health and noticed my hairline moving down my forehaed.
Because you are cute, handsome, and sexy that way. Bald men can be very attractive! Be careful what you wish for.
I’ve never been mistaken for Yul Brenner.
I’m not bald, and my head doesn’t glimmer.
