Senate Democrats are going to be working over the Christmas break to deliver a lump of coal to the American people in the form of a radical changing of the Senate's rules. This is a naked power grab by liberals in the Senate pure and simple.
The National Journal reports that Senate Democrats are laying the groundwork to chip away at the filibuster on January 5, 2011. They are going to push the idea that a simple majority of the Senate can abolish the filibuster rules, or radically change the rules, in a new Congress.

Well, we both know that no one's going to literally tar and feather the little tyrants in the Senate, though they certainly deserve it.
No, we'll have to increase the intensity of our resistance to their statist abuse of the Constitution, and take our protests to the next level. They're bucking the clear will of The People with their shenanigans, and there will be repercussions. Elections have consequences.
Only one reply here got it right as to WHY this is being proposed: The DRAM act passage. It already passed the House - it only needs to pass the Senate. The Democrats NEED an amnesty bill in order to stop inevitable losses looming in 2012. The only way they can do it is new illegal voters. This whole exercise is to create new Democrat voters. That’s what all of this is about. It’s all about passing the DREAM Act in the Senate - every Democrat’s future employment depends on it. That’s why the House took it up in the Lame Duck Session.
Here is the question for any members here who know about such things: is there any way for them to be stopped from changing the Filibuster Rule?
Republicans would gladly hand the filibuster back to Rats in the spirit of bipartisanship.

Those 22 or so Senate democrats up for election in 2012 might want to speak up loud and clear on their position of this change.
Funny, the DEMs were not concerned 'bout this when they had the 60 votes - now that they don't, the filibuster is being abused and the rule must be modified so that they can break it up.
And, like you say, if they get into a 60-40 minority - they'll want it back. Prolly will say that it is a "necessary check" on the evil GOP ...

You've made a hugely important distinction between America and other nations, my friend.
What's sad to me, is that so many Americans have lost sight of the true source of our freedom, which is of course, The People - not the government. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny ~ when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
We have obviously allowed our government to assume far too much control over us. It has now become as tyrannical as the government we declared our independence from in 1776.
I sincerely hope that we can rein it back in through civil means in the coming years. Our failure to do so will lead to two possible outcomes. One is a second American revolution, and the second is the complete destruction of our constitutional republic.
We must, must succeed.
Now that we control the house they cant do alot of damage and since we will take the Sente in 2012 that will helpus big time. We can jam our entire programs down their stinking gulletts.
