(CNN) -- A 27-year-old mother surrendered her baby girl to firefighters in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, authorities said Saturday.
She told firefighters at Fire Station 46 that the newborn was just six hours old. The firefighters accepted the girl, wrapping her in a blanket. She was healthy and did not appear to have been neglected or abused.
Firefighters named the newborn Noel, in honor of the Christmas holiday...

Yes, exactly. My darling daughter is now 17, and after she was born I held her and sang to her and carried her (yes, and changed her diapers, cleaned up her messes, and rocked her in my arms when she cried at night). I can't even begin to imagine giving her up as an infant.
But then again, my circumstances were presumably mightily different from the mother in the news story.
where’s the father in all this? Studies have shown that babies are routinely adopted out while the father is desparately trying to track down his infant from what little (or no) information the mother provides.
They are also sent to foster homes like my hubby’s psychotic ex wife who has no business with children of her own (horrendous permissive non-parent) let alone other foster children.
The System Worked. Thank God.
Doesn't say in the story. It's Los Angeles, California... she could be a space alien. ;-)
I don't know if the Safe Haven law in CA makes a distinction.
I so agree!
We have it here in Ohio. Drop off at any police station, fire station and emergency room, no questions asked.
Lots of possibilities, but these pop into mind immediately:
> Studies have shown that babies are routinely adopted out while the father is desparately trying to track down his infant from what little (or no) information the mother provides.
Yes, quite so. One hopes that if the father was sufficiently concerned, he would have been around at the birth six hours prior. It's unlikely that the father in this case is so concerned, but I grant the possibility that the young mother had an agenda.
“We have it here in Ohio. Drop off at any police station, fire station and emergency room, no questions asked.”
Glad the baby is safe, but really no questions? how do they do know if the baby is even the persons who dropped it off?
So many of these stories of unwanted newborns end in tragedy, it is truly heartwarming to hear of one who will at least have a chance in this world.
Thank you for posting this!
One would think that law enforcement would check for missing children, etc. The whole idea of anonymity is to encourage people to drop off babies rather than do something they would later regret.
>> Good for California that they have a law that allows this:
It may also encourage women to carry out the pregnancy instead of seeking abortion.
The comments she got every time is that they had thought putting a baby up for adoption was far more cruel than abortion. But when they saw how happy our son was, how much love we gave him, and saw some of the letters from his birth-mom (without any identifying information) they changed their attitudes.
I understand your sentiment. A single mother who is unprepared is facing a daunting challenge, and giving the baby to loving adoptive parents is an act of sacrificial love.
What studies are these? In most states the adoption has to be advertised in the newspapers with adequate information to help an unidentified father track it down. Also, if the father is known, he has to consent to the adoption or at least decline to contest it.
If it gets the public further interested in the matter, it won’t be in vain.
The issue of citizenship at birth should be determined by the alliegance of the parents that will raise the child.
The problem with both citizenship at birth and illegal immigration is a problem of loyalty or alliegance. Until recent times new immigrants came to the U.S. for our opportunity to succeed that did not exist where they came from . For religious freedom, for honest laws and for the right to be allowed to lead their lives without a dictatorial state.
In recent times the magnet that drew both illegal and legal immigrants has become economic only. In many cases “government support” only, which is distructive.

The best example I have ever read:
“Born American, But in the Wrong Place” by Peter W. Schramm

this new born baby will likely be adopted out and will not grow up in foster care... we adopted our two sons from "the county system" in California... i highly recommend it to anyone who wants to adopt but does not have thousands of dollars to do so...
