Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

“WE” refers to my ancestors, and.... General Robert Edward Lee was very upset about the way the North had vilified the South after the war. In 1870, just before his death, Lee told Governor Fletcher Stockdale of Texas,

“Governor, if I had foreseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; no sir, not by me. Had I foreseen these results of subjugation I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in my right hand.”

So don’t bring him into it.....

Because the Confederates did not commit GENOCIDE of 6 million people.....

Are you REALLY that stupid, that I would have to point out the obvious difference?

Correction: Robert E. Lee did not believe secession was needed, and opposed it until Virginia left. He never felt it was unlawful.

As a matter of fact, I do.

Now, it with great hometown pride that I recall for your pleasure the great radical Republican of the “Civil” war era, Thaddeus Stevens. Ole Thad knew what the Confederacy was all about and he sought to crush it and every tentacle it had grown. In that spirit we continue to denounce traitors and treasonous snakes, vermin unfit to walk the sacred ground of this nation God has chosen as a beacon to the world.

The war was lost by those who sought to destroy it. Your “Confederates” failed, thank God. But, like Satan’s minions, like demons who skulk in the dark and who seek to possess the unaware and weak, like the multitudes who hate what America is and stands for, the Confederate Cultists slither among us. Doing the best they can to weaken and destroy from within this nation and its promise of freedom, the brothers in arms to the likes of bin-Laden, 0bamao and Lenin, the Confederate Cultists do their daily dirty deeds.

Planes fly every day. Shops sail, too. Seek passage on one of them and peddle your divisive anti-Americanism somewhere else.

Based on your experience, is this dude doing it correctly?

Why not post the pic of you fellating Jeff Davis, Robert Byrd and Comrade Fidel?

I'm sure it titillates you immensely.

Afterwards, you may post the pics of your holiday Frank Fornication bath-house palooza.

Excuse you.

Thaddeus Stevens was a sorry SOB, who should have been hung or shot. “Birth of a Nation” has him pegged. As for your opinion, it is as worthless as that Yankee Radical. Why don’t you go and peddle YOUR Bullsh*T somewhere else?

Southerners are more American than stinking Yankees anyday!

Dionne's an idiot, and that's from someone with strong free soil sympathies (and I've read McPherson's book). This was a complicated conflict with several reasons and several factions.

Ole Thad is revered.

You, my friend, are not.....(except in glory holes.....maybe. Ya gotta work on that technique.)

See the glaring difference?

What good have you accomplished, except, perhaps, to whelp a youngin' or two?

Accept the stark reality that THE WAR IS OVER AND THE CONFEDERACY LOST!

Don't like it?

Trade citizenships with a Mexican. He may well turn out to be a better American than you.

Outsiders from from mainstream of Southern culture, and looked upon as such by Southern society.

Which "Southern" society? Cavaliers? (Largely English) Yeoman farmers (largely Scots-Irish or German) who were at odds with Cavaliers?

It's more complicated. The south aren't all evil and the north wern't all saints (NYC Draft Riots, etc).

Thanks for demonstrating my point. Here is how your own source describes the so-called black confederate soldier...African Americans who served with the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Yeah we already know there were black slaves and servants 'marching alongside' the confederate army, pardner. However, these men were not issued weapons nor did they fight as soldiers. They were there to cook and clean and drove and livery, they were NOT soldiers anymore than they were free.

You said: “We should have told them all to “shove it” and fought a guerilla (sic) war until they were choking on their own blood!”

I replied: “Fortunately more rational minds than your prevailed.”

I misunderstood nothing.

Lee was opposed to secession and frequently derided the south for having done so.
