Snowfall total climbs into 30-inch range in several Union County towns

New Jersey residents are digging out of a blizzard that dumped nearly three feet of snow in some areas, stranded motorists for hours and closed dozens of roads.

New tallies put Union County at the epicenter of the storm, where 31.8 inches of snow fell in Elizabeth, according to National Weather Service estimates. Roselle residents are contending with nearly 29 inches and Union and Clark are under 27 inches of powder.

"This is the worst snowfall since January '97 when we recorded 33 inches,'' Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage said.

He said public works crews plowing since last night have opened up all the streets. Before heading to City Hall, he spent nearly 2 1/2 hours this morning digging out his driveway where he said the drifts reached more than 4-foot heights in some spots.

"Our priority is opening up routes to the hospital, the seaport and the mall and making sure people can get to work,'' said Bollwage.

And remember this one?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Anthony_Bilandic

Shortly before the end of his administration, a blizzard struck Chicago and effectively closed down the city. The city’s slow response to the debilitating storm was blamed on Bilandic’s inaction. He lost the primary election to Jane Byrne, a disgruntled former member of his Cabinet, who went on to succeed Bilandic.[1] Many political observers saw Bilandic’s defeat as indicative of the end of Chicago’s Democratic machine.

Geeze, I’m no expert golfer; but, his form looks terrible. I wonder what kind of score he gets/gives himself.

We go about 30” on Staten Island where I live. Drifts in the 5’ to 6’ range. Been blowing and drifting all day with what I would guess are 20 to 30 mph winds. I’ve seen nicer days.

Here in coastal Monmouth County we have about three feet of the stuff, and drifts up to six. We had several “coasters” last winter, but none quite as heavy as this one.

Actually, Lindsay won reelection. He lost the Republican primary and then won the three way race against Republican John Marchi and conservative democrat (there were those at one time)Mario Procaccino. Procaccino actually coined the term “limousine liberal” in that campaign.

Lindsay at the local level laid the groundwork for today’s national game plan by the socialist left- he won minorities, highly educated, and extremely wealthy while the working classes- paying the taxes-who still had impassable roads a week after the snow in the outer boroughs-split their vote between the Republican and conservative Democrat.

Here in Ridgewood (northern Bergen county), we got 10 inches, give or take. My landlord, in Pompton Lakes, got 30.

As much as I despise the TOTUS, I don’t think the Federal government is responsible for micro-managing snow removal, any more than it is responsible for evacuating New Orleans before a hurricane.

We are still getting pretty good gusts of wind. Hope I don’t have to shovel the drive tomorrow.

Not well, carport's roof looks like it is going to fall in. Streets have not been plowed as of now. Wind is just blowing snow all over & nobody is going anywhere. Thankfully my horses were fed by the barn owner. I don't even think we will be able to get out in the morning unless the darn town plows. It has been nice not seeing any cars but enough of the snow. I am good for a few yrs now.

I’m good for the rest of my life.

If I never saw snow again, I could still die happy.

Thanks for the correction. The infamous “Lindsay Snowstorm” struck on my 2nd birthday so everything I know of these events is second-hand. Am I right that Lindsay made a big show of marching his entire administration over to the city clerk’s office to change his political affiliation from Republican to Democrat?

How did you ladies fare?

Hi metmom! We were snug at home during most of the storm, so we were okay. We got upwards of a foot of snow here. Unfortunately, we did have to cancel our plans to visit the in-laws who live on Cape Cod Monday. The roads were in atrocious condition.... The folks got hammered, down on the Cape.

This storm came early this year. Big storms in December are fairly rare around here, in eastern Massachusetts; but they do happen from time to time. (We had a big one in 2007, too.)

So much for global warming....

Thanks for asking! I hope all is well with you and yours.

That’s a lot of snow and the worst kind.

That nor’easter snow is the worst for being heavy and wet.

We’re getting light freezing drizzle again. This is the second time this month. It’s pretty rare around here.

I’m looking forward to the weekend when it’s supposed to top out at 50 either Fri or Sat. It’ll make it nice for all people traveling. I’ve gotten stuck having to travel on holiday weekends in horrible weather and what with the accidents, it was a REAL mess.

The vehicles are all going to get vacuumed and washed. WE have central vacuuming hooked up to a shop vac in the basement and have an outlet right by the back door. I can grab the hose and haul it out and vacuum out the cars in minutes.

We got hardly anything from the storm. It was cold and very windy, a good day to stay inside, but other than that, we saw precious little snow.

That is a really good idea, if I ever get my farm remind to get one. Still not plowed out here. Called the town & they are laughing about it. I took a bad fall inside last night on the tile floor. I should have went to the ER but wasn’t calling an ambulance. Waiting for them I bet I would still be on the floor. People in Brick are furious at the mayor. I can’t wait for the town meeting.

I’m not sure how he changed it. Today we would call him what he was originally- a RINO. He was the medias golden boy-after the loss of the Kennedy’s, they were looking for a liberal to embrace. His fame went down with the snowstorm, sanitation strike, teachers strike, and transit strike.

The only good thing that happened during his tenure was the 69 Mets- and he had nothing to do with that!
