How sad. A foolish error, and they’re all dead.

...constant companions who acted like brothers and even went shoe shopping together before Christmas so they all would have the same pair,... In my neighborhood, that's called a gang.

I’ve been aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide for so many years, I’m not really sure if I was fully cognizant of that danger at 17.
It seems about once a week in the winter I read of someone mishandling/using Kerosene heaters and gas generators. This story seems bigger because of the number of fatalities.

The biggest tragedy is the loss of 5 lives and it is a shame that comments have to show little regard for this loss.

Hispanic street gang in Little Haiti, not gay. The gangs wear their gang’s particular shoe, colors of clothing, etc.

Car exhaust is not pure Carbon dioxide, and you can smell it. They must have chosen to ignore that smell. Or maybe they were asleep before the fumes arrived. In any case it is a tragedy.

The bottom line of this tragedy is:
They shouldn't have gone shopping for the same shoes.
They shouldn't have stayed at a motel.
They shouldn't have celebrated a birthday.
They should have got the car fixed so they could turn it off.

"They were celebrating a birthday Sunday night when they were overcome by carbon monoxide from a car they left running in a garage under their Hialeah motel room, police said. The teens' friends told police that the car was having engine trouble, and they had probably left it running so that they wouldn't get stuck with a car that wouldn't start, police spokesman Carl Zogby said. What kind of motel has a garage under the room??? A $6/night room??
Sad case for the families involved.

It's more like a condo complex than your standard hotel. They were saying on the news that the car that was running in the garage had to be jumped earlier in the day. It's possible they left it running to charge the battery.
The question is how did the fumes manage to seep up into the hotel room?

I used to live and work down there and had several Haitian coworkers. They were a strange bunch, never could quite figure them out. There is a vast cultural difference.

"Five people came to celebrate a birthday," Immacula Nazon said. "Now they're victims." Victims? Only of their own stupidity.
