The real reason Vick got a second chance (cause he's a jock)
Washington comPost ^ | December 29, 2010 | Richard Cohen

Posted on 12/29/2010 10:25:33 AM PST by Zakeet

The commentary about President Obama's call to the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles regarding that adjudicated dog killer Michael Vick has now reached an apogee of stupidity that strongly suggest that too many otherwise smart people have lost their ability to reason. Obama, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recounted, said, "'So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance.' He said, 'It's never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail.' And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall." It helps, I think, that Vick has completed 63.2 percent of his passes and has 20 touchdowns. He is not your average felon.

[Snip]

Dog fighting was Vick's hobby. He had been warned about it. His own father had told him to stop. He persisted because, as with many great athletes, he was never held accountable. A nation of jock-sniffers always looks away when a great athlete does something wrong. Nothing is an important as winning -- we all know that -- and Vick was and is a winner.

[Snip]

Now Vick has punched all the tickets on the road to rehabilitation. He is contrite. He loves pooches. He might even get a dog himself. How much of this is genuine and how much is synthetic I leave to you. But I'll tell you this. Vick got a second chance not because he deserves it but because he can play football. This is the lesson we can all take from this sorry episode. It's one thing to be sorry. It's much better to hit your man in the end zone.

It’s up to you to raise your kids.

Listen, that standard you have, perhaps that should be applied to politicians and not on sports stars.

I don’t care about his character.

I watch him for sporting entertainment.

By your standard, literally no one in Modern America, including entertainers and especially politicans,
be suitable role models for kids.

Which is fine by me, no way do I want the people who entertain me to be worshipped by the young ones.

But do not throw the canard and shibboleth that it’s for the effing children. I don’t care. Don’t let the kids watch sports or worship pop stars.
Don’t idolize sports stars, simple.

Again, he DID his time. You wanna crucify him, go ahead, at least the Eagles’ owner had the sense and guts to hire him.

I couldn’t care less about his off gridiron personality.

Then why are you here defending his character?

There is forgiveness for those who gamble in their sport, regardless of color, and that is exactly how it should be.

There are many people who’s bad side you don’t wanna get on, even the squeaky clean Tom Brady, not to mention the entire NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, the roller derbyers, the wrestlers and even the golfers!

I don’t want to know them. They’re entertainment.

I am just speaking the facts. Why are you so determined to shut me up?

Man, you’re a dense one.

You bring up his character, which I don’t defend or care about. And now you lay defending his character on me.

Fine.

As it is, I would be most happy to have a beer and burger with Vick, heck, he’d be fun to take on a tour of Seoul’s street food stalls.

I just like seeing him play.

If you don’t, then don’t watch him.

But stop moralizing, there are bigger violations of character in our bureaucrats and politicians.

So, Lurie and Reid finally figured out that McNabb was over-rated and traded him.

To a team in the same division!

How's that for telling the world McNabb is a lousy QB?

And how stupid can Snyder/Shanahan be for doing it?

Then the Eagles turn things over to Kolb/Vick.

Kolb, likeable but not a 1st tier QB.

Vick, a dunderheaded QB with a strong arm. He can run around like a blind cat in a seafood store and eventually draw enough defenders away from pass protection to complete his passes and amass impressive running stats 7-12 yards at a clip as the defenders are that far back.

Will Vick ever win a championship for anybody? NO.

Will he put butts in the seats and eyeballs on the tube? For a while.

Then the fans realize having Vick at QB is like driving a Corvette down a blind alley. You get no where really fast.

Yes, but he is probably much worse than the little I know about him.

Heck, you’re touchy and thin skinned too.

Who’s trying to shut you up.

Just calling you out on on your soapbox thumping self righeous morality and indignation over a goddamn football player.

Go ahead and pontificate.

So, apparently Vick at Disneyland with Goofy and Pluto would not have been worth a chuckle to you, eh?

It’s a rhetorical device, but apparently goes over your head and under your knees.

There’s about as much chance of Vick having a beer with me as.........

As far as Seoul, their grilled doggie treats are wonderful.

Having sampled dog, it’s not bad, kinda like rabbit or maybe lamb.

Cooking with Vick - perhaps he has a future career as a Korean food show host!

I've posted quite a few facts about MV and NONE have been refuted. The only response I get is that I shouldn't be posting about MV unless I post that he is a very nice person that has changed and deserves another and another and another and another chance since he is the great hope for the Eagles.
