SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Pittsburgh has fired football coach Mike Haywood, a day after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge.

He was arrested Friday following an incident at his South Bend home, said an officer at the St. Joseph County Jail who declined to give her name. She said Haywood was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Haywood was released on $1,000 cash bond Saturday after the charge was upgraded to a felony.

That is the school’s statement: “We will immediately re-open our search for a head football coach, expanding the process to include a larger pool of candidates. Our goal is to move swiftly, but prudently, to find the right person to successfully lead the Pitt football program for what we hope will be an extended period of time.”

Good for Pitt. No messing around. I like that.
As far as Haywood is concerned, his life has just changed forever.
Sometimes that can happen from just one, stupid, instantaneous mistake.

Betcha he’s replaced by a minority coach. Rodriquez at Michigan might be loose.

Wow, his tenure was about as long a George O’Leary’s at Notre Dame.

Oh yeah, Rodriquez would be a great coach.....just look what he’s done for Michigan! If Pitt wants to regress their program and become massive losers, he’s perfect for the job! Hey, nice Bowl Rod!

...Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson praised Haywood's character when he was hired last month, calling his values "in line with the values of this great university."...

Character? And "values in line with the university?" How come he didn't marry his baby mama?

Arrest is a long way from conviction. It’s even possible he did nothing wrong at all, we just don’t know. A hasty move on Pitt’s part that may yet bite ‘em in the arse.

Pederson should hire Bill Callahan.
