Virginia Tech Survivor Is 'Living for 32' in War to Tighten Gun Laws

WASHINGTON -- Surviving the deadliest shooting massacre in U.S. history wasn't enough to make Colin Goddard an advocate for stricter gun laws. Only when he watched another rampage play out on TV two years later did the Virginia Tech graduate realize he had to speak out.

"That took me back to the day like none other," Goddard said of another troubled gunman who killed 14 at an immigration center in Binghamton, N.Y. "I was watching the body count rise and I was like, this is just the same stuff that is happening to another family now. ... I was like, I've got to get involved. I've got to do something about this."

What Goddard did was join the nation's largest gun-control organization, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. At first, he made public-service spots, speaking for the 32 people slain by a deranged gunman on the campus of Virginia Tech. But he also spoke for the 32 people killed every day in gun violence, people whose deaths don't conjure a million hits on Google.

“Gun control is kinda like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.”

That is one heck of a good analogy, thanks for that one, I’m going to have to use it if I have your permission heh.

I was watching the body count rise and I was like, this is just the same stuff that is happening to another family...

If college students were armed, a real hero would say "I was watching someone get shot and I was like, 'I've got to shoot him.'

He’s an idiot.... I wonder why he survived. He’s living proof you don’t have to be smart to realize that when its the criminal who is holding the gun and you don’t, your prospects of survival aren’t very high.

Guns save lives and bad people kill good people.

Classsic illustration of the fact that crediting "victims" with special wisdom or knowledge is a stupid, destructive, and unethical practice. Twisted by his own experience, this stooge has no business polluting the discourse with his own hysterics. He should go get on a couch, work out his issues, and rejoin the human race.

well stated

You’d be shocked at how many young kids, in the 18-25 year old group who have absolutely no idea that they can fight and defend themselves and that they have a right to do it. A year or two ago the cops in a town here in southern NJ near where I live offered a basic self-defense course for young (college age) women. One of the biggest difficulties the cops had in teaching self-defense to young women was, as one cop put it,’’You have to tell them in order to protect yourself you really do have to actually injure someone’’.

....disturbing image.
Especially because the subtext is “The only good person is a dead person.”

I'd wager that this chump was one of those strong, young, virile young men who huddled shivering under their desks while the killing went on. Now he's a bonafide 'Crusader'. What a pathetic tool.

Proof once again of the Age of Unreason in which we find ourselves, where cowardice is called 'courage'.

[Proof once again of the Age of Unreason in which we find ourselves, where cowardice is called ‘courage’.]

Along with the “Peace is Patriotic” bumper stickers. These idjuts equate “peace” with pacifism and appeasement and want to call cowardice patriotic.

Idiot survivors wish for stricter gun laws. I’ll bet that not one member of the families of the slain would have complained if someone would have shot and killed the perp before he murdered their son or daughter.

The lead in on the article was written by a reporter who in summation stated it was the largest battle of WWII in Europe (for the Americans)....

The history of the first paratrooper is at least factually correct. I served with the 1/508th PIR in the 70's as the first of 3 tours with the 82d spanning 9 years (11 years on Jump status) before retiring a 1SG with Master Parachutist Wings. I beleive the old guy is correct - a quick check of the 82d Airborne Divison Association roles will produce his name; and it is likely the other soldiers too are members of their respective military unit associations.

He mentions his battalion which is correct; the US threw a Division over three days at a 1000 man german battalion in Luxembourg; on that hill there were 5 lines across the hill at different levels - I have been there and excavated with the US Army and Boy Scouts in 2001-2002-2003. We had 10K KIA/wounded in that battle alone in which the unit he cites was committed for three assaults 12-hours apart. It took 5 assaults to take the hill which was at the CENTER of ther German line.

He also mentions the Hurricantan (SP) Forrest which was also a nasty campaign. I have been on the trail as well and the German 77th Inf Div graveyard.

It is better to hold one's toung than to unknowningly accuse as a "bonafide 'Crusader'.

Sorry, Jumper, but I'm not tracking you. Where does WWII come into the picture? I'm not seeing it. Are we talking about the same thread?

If this guy had any sense, he would learn to shoot well and get his CCW.

I think “don’t ever have an affair with Lola ‘cuz her husband will shoot you” should be a secondary lesson.
