Kiss your 100-watt lightbulb goodbye
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 1/1/11 | Tracy Seipel

Californians can start saying goodbye to traditional 100-watt incandescent light bulbs now that the state has become the first in the country to require a new standard for the screw-base bulbs.

Experts say the new rules, which took effect New Year's Day, will save residents money and energy. California is already the nation's leader in energy efficiency standards.

As of Saturday, what used to be a 100-watt light bulb manufactured and sold in California will have to use 72 watts or less. The 72-watt replacement bulb, also called an energy saving halogen light, will provide the same amount of light, called lumens, for lower energy cost.

Similar new standards for traditional 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs will go into effect in California over the next few years, with wattages reduced to 53, 43 and 29 respectively.

The new rule does not ban incandescent light bulbs; it just requires those bulbs to be 25 to 30 percent more efficient. And it only affects incandescent light bulbs manufactured after 2011, not light bulbs already in use or on store shelves.

Good thing I don't live in Cali. I run 300 watt bulbs at different places around the house just for fun.

You can get incandescent light bulbs rated for 25,000 hours that are used by the hospitality industry. If you use them for an average of 7 hours a day they’ll burn out in just a little under 10 years and cost about a buck or less per bulb depending on how many you buy.

Once you stock up all you’ll have to do is watch out for the light bulb police who’ll be monitoring everyone who might be using those unauthorized, evil incandescents!

Kiss your freedom goodbye too... or you can get smart and remarket the old 100 watt bulbs as “heat lamps” or “glow bulbs” LOL

I just read somewhere recently that Germany is using this approach.

I should probably think about black marketing the stuff off.

Last time I looked at prices on Craigslist it was $20 for a 12 oz can.

And the (Quartz) Halogen lamps run super hot. More potential for fire.

Eventually the EPA will ban the CFL bulbs as too hazardous because of their mercury content.

Get rid of the 100W bulb the same time you pass the CA version of Cap and Trade. Gosh, I love living here.

As of today, we now have another 725 Laws on the books in CA. The idiots in Sacramento have some bad Sushi before bedtime and their Utopian Socialistic Dreams become Law the very next day.

Things that you would never have taken seriously and would have laughed out loud when you first heard them are now part of the everyday life of Californians.

I’m surrounded by complete and utter morons...

Can you imagine a guy in prison answering the question, “what you in for?” With “smuggling lightbulbs”?...........

Ten years ago, if someone told me that lightbulbs would be made illegal and marijuana would not be, I’d have said they were nuts......

LOL! Son’s girlfriend bought me a couple of packages of 100w and75w bulbs for Christmas - all wrapped up in pretty Christmas paper! She knows I’m hoarding the incandescent bulbs. I had only bought 60w, but now I have a good selection. I’ll continue to buy more. I’ll make darned sure I don’t have to use those twisty bulbs!
