Has anyone else noticed that the incandescent bulbs periodically ‘break’ off at the metal when unscrewing; or that the ‘threads’ just don’t quite ‘mate’ with the sockets now. Not all of them but I am finding more and more that are faulty. Curious if anyone else has noticed this.

In days past, way past, we built 2 plywood boxes and lined them with tin (or aluminum) foil and nailed in a couple of old used oven racks. We installed a 60 watt bulb in each one and they were the perfect lunch heaters.
Frozen dinners were thawed and piping hot in 2 hours, and 30 minutes to heat a sandwich. We had the freedom to put our food in and rotate it around as needed while we worked. Some time after this someone invented a microwave oven that was cheap enough for the cheap enough place I worked at and the light bulb heaters became a thing of the past, along with two of the best millwrights in the world, Willy M. and Frank T. They both had the old pacemakers and couldn’t be around microwaves. Production fell off quickly and the company went broke from trying to operate on young stupid brains instead of Frank and Willy’s experience.

True story, somewhere in the seat of Chatam County, NC. Another disfunctional result of technological advances.

I’ve two CFL neodymium bulbs and one incandescent neodymium bulb. The light output is roughly the same in my living room.

I am going to continue to sell them as personal heating devices. Over 90% of their energy is released as heat. the fact they also give off light is just coincidental.

When/if that comes to the rest of America most people will just fire up two 60 watt incandescant light bulbs instead of buying the expensive hi-tech replacement.

I hope they stocked up. They kids are gonna be pissed if they don’t have heat sources for their new Easy Bake ovens received from Santa.

We go to Cabela’s in Reno from time to time. We’ll just hit a Wal-Mart or Home Depot and stock up each time. Those lower watt bulbs DO NOT put out the same amount of light. They are as dim as the bastards who come up with these lunacies.

This will end up like the “green” toilet that you have to flush 3 times to down a “load.”

People will now have to modify their light fixtures to increase the bulb receptacles from 1 to 3 just to have the same amount of light that they used to have.

The end result is that people will use even more electricity to see the same as they did before the government stepped in to save electricity.

What to look for when shopping for a long life incandescent light bulb:

Krypton or Halogen gas filled - this helps the filament last longer by redepositing the evaporated tungsten material back onto the filament. it also helps in heat dissipation and circulation.

Multi-filament support - this helps keep vibration from destroying the filament. Most commercial bulbs only have two supports. Look for ones with 6 to 9. Aside from normal household vibration, the filament itself vibrates from electrical energy.

Heavy-duty lead wires - important for the same reasons as above, as well as withstanding the high heat generated by the bulb.

Heat resistant cement - the base needs to be firmly cemented with material that does not deteriorate from heat.

Brass base - most base materials in commercial bulbs are made with inferior metals which deform and cannot withstand the prolonged heat of the bulb.

130 volt bulbs - by running 130 volt bulbs at the slightly lower 120 volt power, the bulb’s lifespan increases dramatically.

With the features listed above, an incandescent light bulb can last 10 years or more. Many companies that make these type of bulbs actually guarantee them for the posted life of the bulb.

Flourescent bulbs have environmental toxicity concerns associated with them and they take 4-5 minutes to reach full brightness. That can be very annoying when only temporary illumination is needed.

Electricity used for lighting in this country makes up about 13.6 percent of total energy used in the US. This percent is for the residential and commercial sectors combined. Residential lighting consumption was about 208 billion kWh. Generally, lighting makes up about 15.4 % of the total electricity used. Commercial lighting, which includes commercial and institutional buildings and public street and highway lighting, is about 303 billion kWh. So with this reduction in electricity for lighting, how much does this save? With population growth, won’t we be using the same amount we saved in ten years?

Instead of reducing consumption by focusing on the electric light bulb, why not focus on increasing the supply and decreasing the cost of that supply? I say Thorium nuclear technology should go on the fast track. And if your state representative tells you they don’t know anything about Thorium, tell them to get off the political wagon and start doing some homework.
