“I went back to upstate NY over the summer, it was unbelievable in some areas. Complete ghetto, complete lack of care of maintenance, the trees and greenery looked like it was returning to the wild. I kept thinking, “WTH are you people paying nearly all your money to the government for, to live like this?””

Upstate NY had less of a problem “demographically” than it had competing with other states (not countries). As the jobs left, there was no reason for people to stay in areas with fairly harsh winters. They were replaced by the Section 8 underclass, who continue to drive out any that dreamed of staying.

I know just what you mean and must agree to some extent. However, I sincerely hope it isn’t too late.

If I had my way, no one would be allowed to vote until they passed a basic civics exam and could state the reason for their choices. (I know. Silly dream.)

That brick. mansard roofed Second Empire style house on the next to the last row of photos appears to be out in the country. Somebody really should rescue it from collapsing, it’s too nice for such a fate. Heck, most of them are, it’s just sickening for an architecture and history buff such as myself.

Yeah, that was the image that most disturbed me.

I don’t understand why the furniture and fixtures in these places have not been salvaged. I want the chairs from the Presbyterian Church!

Yes, the similarity is striking. Thanks for the link.

All evidence points to what you say as being true. Perhaps enough people will get over their fear of stating the obvious to come up with some solutions. The right to govern themselves was won long ago. It’s no one’s fault but their own if they lack the ability to do so.

Quotas and Affirmative Action haven’t benefited any group to which they have been extended, but only the brave will point out that fact.

Never been to Detroit (and certainly don’t want to visit now). The city looks post-apocalyptic.

They are nothing but animals.

"Feral humans" was the term some FReeper came up with.

Amazing look at what Detroit once was and what it is today.

And yet... I was there last summer visiting a couple of suburbs just miles away where I lived in the 50s. Neither more than middle-class then, they're obviously a bit wealthier now -- even the cookie-cutter houses I remember from one then-new mass development have been cared for, improved and differentiated.

Does seem to be a prime area for salvaged material.

No I didn't strip them myself. The guy I bought them from had a big tank full of stripper and he just submerged the entire door. They were all a few inches larger that my doorways so the carpenter trimmed them off nice and even, otherwise they would have been ragged looking. I have 2 doors that have etched glass in the top. They look great!

Comerica Bank moved its headquarters to Dallas in 2007 after 158 years in Detroit. One has to wonder when General Motors and other remaining Detroit businesses will be making a similar move. Very sad situation for a great city.

In all seriousness, I see a potential opportunity here: Sell off the work work, windows, doors, chandeliers, etc. Turn Detroit into a huge salvage yard.

Assuming you did get permission, your cost basis as a result of extortion, ransoms, armored convoys, 360 security, combat pay, insurance, and care for your wounded ON TOP OF salvage costs would make profitability an impossibility.

More likely however, in all seriousness, your request to do this work would be turned into a racial issue by the powers-that-be in Detriot and the MSM.

Your resources would be better spent raising the Titanic and making her seaworthy once again.

Not everyone is fit for self-rule. Maybe there should be a rule that says, “If you can’t feed, clothe and shelter yourself, you should not have any part in selecting leaders for yourself or others.”

Federal “urban renewal” or “affordable housing” funds should no longer go to such former “cities”. The money would be better spent helping residents escape/migrate to the areas with the lowest unemployment rates, best business climates, lowest taxes, most naturally affordable housing markets, etc - none of which would be Liberal run cities.

It was Frederick Douglass, I believe, who said something like, "The black man has his freedom. Now, it is up to the white man to leave us alone for a hundred years...and let us see what we can do with it."

But the left oouldn't keep their meddling hands off -- their voters wanting to "do good", their leaders wanting to command the votes of a dependent class.

To tell the truth, I don't believe Bull Connor would've wanted for the blacks what has been visited upon them by the liberals.
