Eight new Republican officeholders were sworn in Saturday at the Galveston County Justice Center.
Recognizing that this is a Republican celebration, said Judge David Garner, before audience applause interrupted him, Im going to bring forth our new County Judge Mark Henry.
Henry, the first Republican to hold the office of county judge since Reconstruction, defeated Jim Yarbrough.
Republican Kevin OBrien will join Henry on the commissioners court as commissioner for precinct 2.
Im getting ready to do a good job for you, OBrien told the packed room.
Ken Clark will continue his duties as commissioner for precinct 4.
After defeating criminal District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk, Republican Jack Roady took office.
I have a lot to be thankful for, he said. It was your hard work that got me here, and now its time for me to get to work.
After her oath, Judge Susan Criss, of the 212th District Court, said the new faces to the countys political scene will be welcomed.
I believe we call this a courthouse and not a court building or a court office because the people who serve here and work here are like a family, said Criss, a Democrat who has presided over the 212th district court since 1999. I look forward to working with every one of you.
Judge John Ellisor remains as judge of the 122nd District Court, and John Grady is taking the seat as judge of county court No. 1.
Republicans Barbara Roberts will preside over county court No. 2, and Christopher Dupuy will preside at county court No. 3.
While Roberts was reciting the oath, her daughter stopped to hug her mother.
Im so proud of you, she said, crying.
Dwight Sullivan was able to take the oath after securing a surety bond.
Kim Sullivan was sworn in as probate judge, Jason Murray will begin work as the district clerk and Kevin Walsh will serve as county treasurer.
Justices of the peace Jim Schweitzer, precinct 1, Penny Pope, precinct 2, Sonny James, precinct 3 and Michael Nelson, precinct 4, all were sworn in Saturday.

Yes. The North county is pretty solid Republican and has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Also hurricane Ike did what hurricane Katrina did for LA, it drove out the high concentrations of generational Democrats in the South part of the county, particularly in Galveston. Unfortunately for our Houstonian neighbors to the North, they were the unlucky hosts for society’s parasites from LA and Galveston.
Criss, a Democrat who has presided over the 212th district court since 1999, is popular in the County. Her father Lloyd Criss, is Chairman of the county Democratic party, and past State Representative. Criss ran unopposed for her position; thus she did not get swept out of office by the large Republican swell.
Hard to get voted out when you are unopposed.
Not a few Republican attorneys in the county wish they had run against her this year. They would be called Judge now.
Wow. Been awhile...
