Discovery Health is no more. Oprah didn’t displace it, she did a wholesale takeover.
Yes, GM donated those cars for the poor people that go to Oprah’s show. Oprah took the credit. When the people couldnt cover the taxes or insurance, Oprah, their hero, wouldnt part with a buck.
GM stepped up once again and paid that too. Some or most had to sell the cars becuase they couldnt afford them and Oprah took all the credit for that give away.
But it was all GM.

And on Monday’s premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show, she kicked it off with an Oprah-sized stunt: Everybody in the audience got a new car, 276 midsize Pontiac G6’s fresh off the assembly line — each worth $28,400. According to a spokeswomen for Harpo Productions Inc., Oprah’s company, the recipients must pay a tax on the winnings, just like any prize.
For a brand new Pontiac G-Six, the model given away on the show, the sticker price is $28,500. The $28,500 would need to be claimed as income so, depending on the individuals tax bracket, the tax could be as high as $7,000. And that was after Pontiac agreed to pay most of the local charges, including state sales tax and licensing fees.
The Harpo Spokeswomen said winners had three choices. They could keep the car and pay the tax, sell the car and pay the tax with the profits or forfeit the car.
You mean everyone watching isn’t gonna get a free car, too? Shock!
25 years on the air and I still haven’t watched one of her shows.
Oprah cares for the poor the way Michelle Obama cares for the poor - mosly while on vacation. Actually, I like Oprah more than Michelle Obama because Oprah does spend her own money when she flies around the world. Mrs. Great Leader spends the money of the taxpayer for her vacations.

I haven’t watched her either. Don’t the weeping women realize that is why she is where she is, and you are where you are. Oh well, she won’t be giving away any more Pontiacs, her Boy fixed that.
Lots of ‘city centric’ folks like Oprah don’t understand how much of the market is NOT cable. This is why the networks, as lousy as they are, still have the highest rated shows. I don’t have cable; and, if I had the need to see Oprah, I’d have to fork out for satellite tv, or something equal.
Networks still have the deepest market penetration. Its a mystery to me why Oprah would want to be lost in the cable channels...ego is the only thing that comes to mind. She thinks she is going to become the next Ted Turner, and build her own network....but I don’t think so.
I don’t think I have ever sat down to watch a show myself. Never was really a fan. But good luck to her. If she can make more money then God himself, then bless her heart. Not seeing anything wrong with what she is doing. Heck, is Rush Limbaugh not charging fans to get a newsletter and view his show on-line? How silly is that?
They are both driven and have smart business minds. Credit where credit is due.
That’s funny, they seem to think she wanted to be on a deep cable channel most folks don’t have. Nobody wants to be on the deep channels, that’s how far she’s fallen.
She’s not on pay TV, she’s on one of the low rent high numbered cable channels that only the hardcore TV people even get. Her channel took over for Discovery Health, usually found in the third tier on most cable systems.
Discovery replace Discovery Health with OWN, which they only have partial ownership of. They exchanged 100% interest in a failing network with 50% interest in a probably going to fail network.
She went from being the dirt-poor child of a single mom in 50s Jim Crow Mississippi to being a powerful billionaire, and she did it on the free market. She was a run-of-the-mill TV hostess before she took over a failing talk show in Chicago, and pushed it to become the most popular daytime talk show on the air. And then she wildly exploited that to her financial gain.
I’m not going to begrudge her the success she earned even if I like nothing else about her.
I agree...Oprah should just give her fans free DVDs and cable service....doesn’t she CARE about the poor?

She's not an uber supporter of "The WON" for nothing......he owes her now......free cable will soon be a "right" for the "right people".
