Steve King Moves Forward on Bill to End Birthright Citizenship

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa, marking his first day as head of a House immigration panel, introduced a bill on Wednesday to end the practice of birthright citizenship.

The bill would amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth.

It's generally thought that the 14th Amendment provides a constitutional guarantee of citizenship for anyone born in the United States -- known as "birthright citizenship" -- but King told Hotsheet last year that he does not interpret the 14th Amendment that way.

Concerns about illegal immigration last year spurred some Republicans to call for a debate over birthright citizenship, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said last year he was considering proposing a constitutional amendment so that children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants would not automatically be citizens.

Great idea, but not a chance in hell. You need a cooperative POTUS and 60+ seats in the Senate.

Make all those who disagree explain why and put them on the record.

Interesting legislation to tackle early on. Wouldn’t be one of my first choices but hey, who knows? Let someone else be the “no” party. I hope they have dozens of bills that requires the Won to veto, though he won’t have to explain his no votes.

Great start, but we should have parallel lines of attack.

In addition to this, end anchorbaby visa sponsorship and chain sponsorship.
These rules would help immediately:
- citizen sponsoring foreign spouse should take 5 years of marriage until the permanent green card is given rather than 2 as now (i.e. temporary green card only until 5 years). Now fake marriages are common in certain immigrant communities (price for fake marriage is about $8k).
- citizens who got their citizenship by sponsorship cannot sponsor anybody (ban chain sponsorship) ever
- anchorbabies cannot sponsor anybody (overlapping with previous one, but better to make sure if activist courts try to get involved).
