With more snow approaching, New York mayor vows preparedness
Thu Jan 6, 2011 5:50pm EST
NEW YORK (Reuters) - With New York City facing another likely snowstorm this weekend, Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed on Thursday that improvements have been made to avoid the mishandled mess that was made of last week's massive storm.
Bloomberg, who has been widely criticized for the many streets that went unplowed and the transportation systems that ground to a halt, said the city is better prepared for snow.
An accumulation of roughly six inches is expected in the New York region on Friday.
The city is adding GPS trackers to determine where sanitation trucks are during snow cleanup and adding personnel in the field to monitor cleanup progress, the mayor said.
"While I realize there were problems with the city's snow cleaning efforts last week, I want to assure all New Yorkers we are doing everything in our power to make sure we don't experience those problems again," Bloomberg said at a City Hall news conference.

Easily bypassed!
“adding personnel in the field to monitor cleanup progress”
Will they also be ‘union’ members?
People need to put a GPS tracking device on their sleazy mayor and the whole government in NY.
Wow what a great plan!
If only they had known BEFORE that they get snow in NY some times...
they might have had a chance to make a plan before this.
*sigh*
Is there ANYTHING the government is not good at?
Considering the fact that many of the plows were reported to be just skimming the top of the snow, GPS won’t make much difference.
Privatization works. Oh, I know, can’t privatize because Bloomberg would loose the Union votes.
Each plow should have a Coke machine.
Wire cutters and/or tin foil really mess with GPS units.
Tin foil? Haven’t heard that in years.
Really aluminum foil, but everyone calls it tin foil these days.
Actually, any kind of sheetmetal “hat” on the antenna renders the GPS blind. Of course, NYNY could be cheaping out and using cell phone based tracking instead of GPS, and the tin foil may not be as effective, thats where the wire cutters (known as “dikes” in the trade) come into play.
(plows get GPS trackers) - the union goons are gonna freak over this!
...so they’re going to spend a bunch of money they can’t afford?
The problem is THE UNION. Until you crack them, they’re not going to care if you’re tracking them or not.
If they cared, they wouldn’t have been so blaise the first time.
The solution is real easy. Cut GPS=no transmission. No transmission=no display on Dispatch screen.
No display on Dispatch screen=Dispatcher call: “Unit 1447; Unit 1447, I show you as offline. I guess you don’t get paid for today” ;-)
Wrongo! Unit 1447 needs maintenance ASAP, dispatch crew (more than one flunky) to 123 W main st. Waiting for their arrival. CC to union boss.
They would also need a plow to surface distance sensor and a semiautomatic donut holder.
Today I saw a sanitation truck making garbage pickups and some wise-ass sanitation worker had written on the side of his truck “there was no slowdown”
Underneath some inspired citizen had spray painted “Tell it to the FBI, garbage guy”
Its a sad day when Unions would rather risk lives than do their jobs.
NYC is sooooooooo screwed
But of course!
