Reporting from Washington President Obama has recast his White House team for the second half of his term, giving top jobs to a pair of Clinton-era veterans in a signal to business leaders and independent voters that he is resolved to steer a more centrist course after two years of intense partisan clashes.
Obama announced Thursday that he was installing William Daley as chief of staff, entrusting the White House operation and perhaps the future of his presidency to a former Commerce secretary who has warned that pressing a liberal agenda risks scaring away an all-important bloc of moderate voters.
Obama on Friday will name Gene Sperling as his chief economic advisor, turning again to a Clinton alumnus who has experience working with a Republican majority, the reality that now confronts Obama with GOP control of the House.
Sperling, until now a counselor to Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, will move into the same job he held under President Clinton from 1997 to 2001, director of the National Economic Council. He will replace Lawrence H. Summers, who is returning to Harvard University.
With former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe starting work as a senior White House advisor next week, the president's new leadership team is largely set for what is expected to be a volatile two years, culminating in the 2012 presidential election.

He picked mostly Clinton staffers the first time around, too. Wasn’t centrist then. Isn’t centrist now. I do expect more pragmatism in some areas, but not centrist views.
Obammy the Centrist?
Naaaa... I ain’t buying it.
He picked mostly Clinton staffers the first time around, too. Wasn’t centrist then. Isn’t centrist now. I do expect more pragmatism in some areas, but not centrist views. He’ll go kicking and screaming every time he doesn’t do something for the far left...like calling the GOP hijackers when he signed on to a measly 2 year extension to the existing tax rates.
Hmmm... Better stay out of Fort Marcy Park, Mr. Obama...
I read this as as shifting gears for re-election. The Left is howling betrayal. What they don’t understand is without moderate swing voters, Obama has no chance of being re-elected.
The Left will vote for him when all is said and done but Obama is not so ideologically rigid he will write off the rest of the country. He wants that second term.
It's almost like somebody was orchestrating the propaganda, isn't it?
But it couldn't happen here, with our "free press", could it?
Me neither. He just doesn't have it in him.
Example, Valarie Jarrett taking Axelrods place. That is a disaster. Axelrod wrote the tele-prompter stuff. She is so far left it will show.
The myth that Clinton and his crew were centrists just will never die. Newt and the Republican Congress forced Clinton to sign bills that were centrist to center right. They had to beat him over the head with welfare reform for a couple of years before he succumbed to popular pressure. This is what makes Clinton and his merry band of liberals “centrists”. Hilarious.
Is he going to change his political philosophy, as well? Because if he doesn’t, this is all smoke and mirrors.
Suppose Vince Foster rode or walked there? I bet Her Heinous knows.
They even admit it’s about votes, not a “move to the center”. Well, I am impressed that they didn’t refer to the Sultan as a centrist moving to the right...
I’m sure they’ll correct that.
“The myth that Clinton and his crew were centrists just will never die.”
Prior to ‘94, BJ pushed for Euro-style healthcare, and was always a big fan of affirmative action/token makework and activist judges. Libs are hoping the post-Republican Revolution legislation will cause people to forget those things...
Zer0 would have to pick S! for that position before I’d believe Zer0 was moving anywhere.
Wrapped up in a carpet and driven over seemed to a plausible scenario.
But we'll never know.
His administrations is full of Clinton people and advisers. The Bush, Clinton thing is getting old. I can see why they are scared of Palin and the Tea Party.
I always laugh when they label anyone connected to the Clintons as centrists.
What a farce...of course anything associated with Obama or the Clintons is a farce by default.
Notice Obongo Bozos fresh lipstick Centrest Red!
But, he is still a PIG!
