Hidden within a camouflage tent behind Jared Lee Loughner's home sits an alarming altar with a skull sitting atop a pot filled with shriveled oranges.

A row of ceremonial candles and a bag of potting soil lay nearby, photos reveal.

Experts on Sunday said the elements are featured in the ceremonies of a number of occult groups.

Investigators have focused on Loughner's online anti-government ramblings as the chief motivation for the shooting Saturday of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

The discovery of the shrine raises the possibility that Loughner, 22, may have been driven by other forces. Students and faculty at Pima Community College, which he attended until his suspension last summer, said Loughner was clearly at odds with the world.

"He was one of the last kids tocome in, and he sat down and almost immediately started laughing to himself in a way that was just kind of creepy," a classmate, Alex Kotonias, 20, told USA Today.

"As soon as the teacher started going over the syllabus, he had this outburst out of nowhere, didn't even raise his hand, and started asking the teacher some sort of weird questions about whether he believed in mind control."

Adjunct Prof. Ben McGahee, 28, worried about violence. "I remember going home and thinking to myself, 'Is he going to bring a weapon to class?'" he told USA Today.

Lynda Sorenson, 52, who was in McGahee's basic algebra class with Loughner, expressed similar fears in emails to friends, The Washington Post reports.

On June 14, she wrote: "We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon. Everyone interviewed would say, 'Yeah, he was in my math class and he was really weird.' I sit by the door with my purse handy."

In September, college officials sent campus police officers to Loughner's home, where he lives with his parents, with a letter informing him he could not return without a mental health professional's written assurance that hispresence at college would "notpresent a danger to himself or others."

"It was obvious to everyone that Jared wasn't a normal guy,"said neighbor Anthony Woods, 19.

Loughner worked as a volunteer at the Pima Animal Care Center, where he walked dogs and cleaned cages. "He loved animals and was a good worker," said another volunteer.

Loughner had once tried to join the military but was deemed unsuitable, officials said.

That does not look anywhere close to a shrine to me, just looks like a pile of junk laying around.

I guess he went cheap on the shrine.

Witchcraft eh? I guess it wasn’t Palin’s fault after all—it was Christine O’Donnell’s fault!

More proof that gun control doesn’t work, but if guns were not so controlled, criminals might be subdued more quickly by those abiding by the law.

Potting soil and flower pots. A deadly combination.

This is a horrible story, but all this political staging going on to determine who this creep was aligned with (left or right) is absurd. Clearly this guy was FUBAR in the head, and IMO shouldn’t be tied to any group, left or right. Even if he leans one way or the other, it proves nothing about the group. Tick...tick...tick...BOOM! Just another nut who couldn’t function in society, nothing more.

Yes, the media is disgusting, but I wouldn’t put much stock in many of the “exclusive” photos or other claims. One has to ask how the “media” got those photos? I would think that the shooters house would be sealed off as a crime scene. Someone could have staged that photo elsewhere.

Well well, seems the real evil he was involved in was the OCCULT.

Will the dummies place bills on the table to ban the Occult........and miss the chance to control the SPEECH of Americans.....probably not.

The attributes associated with “mind control” are similar to what the mind would experience in “demon influence” or “demon possession”.

It doesn’t matter if one doesn’t believe in such things, but recognizing and not ignoring some people not only believe in them, but attribute their thinking to other such third persons manifests they are experiencing and recognize such attributes upon their volition.

The occultic evidence further manifests the criminal not only believed in the demonic, but was worshiping those persons.

Aside,...IMHO, if demon possessed, I find it peculiar the criminal would target a liberal Congresswoman, although conservative and liberal do not equate to righteousness and unrighteousness...so it might also be a ruse to commit premeditated murder, seeking notoriety, while providing for an insanity defense.

Correct…. that the MSM feels completely ENTITLED to politicize this thing AND does so with perfect impunity, is proof of just how far our current politics and this administration have polarized America.

It couldn’t be worse if it was INTENTIONAL!! (I am not convinced it ISN’T!!)

It also demonstrates the pronounced bias and dangerously inimical posture the MSM holds toward Conservatism!

‘Journalism’ in America forfeited its objectivity and professionalism too long ago to even remember.

"Just another nut who couldn’t function in society, nothing more."

Which may well be true IN THIS CASE, but violence is a standard tool of the left. They use it regularly. And the media ignores it. But let someone with even a remote possibility of a link to the "right", and the entire leftist pantheon of commentators explodes in "righteous indignation" about how the right is the "party of political violence".

The ACLU, and their compliant judges, won’t let us
commit people like this guy. If thee is a finger to be pointed, it goes their way, and they know it. That’s why the liberals are jumping at the opportunity to blame someone else.

Oh, I’m sure it is intentional. The MSM always jumps to link these nuts with the conservative movement, and it rarely pans out that way. No wonder they’re going broke.

People blaming this on Palin are disgusting.

Disgusting that some would use the death of a 9 year old girl in an attempt to smear a political opponent.

Actually, beyond disgusting, it exhibits a darkness of the heart and soul that borders on the pathological.
