Seems to me, most of the committing hospitals, Dr’s and infrastructure for the criminally and mentally ill went the way of the buggy whip.

There may be a few, I haven’t yet done any research.
No, the most seriously ill are taken care of. It’s those who are borderline that struggle to get appropriate care.

I recall when the libs pushed a law that prevented the committment of most of these troubled people, many of them began ‘’living on the street’’. Then the libs called them ‘’homeless people’’. We didn’t have a problem with so many ‘’homeless people before the libs dumped all the troubled people who should have been monitored by the state or private institutions.
Here is the first statement that addresses the real problem.
There was a seriously disturbed young man running around and a mountain of evidence he had violence on the top of his sick mind.
Nothing was done to him.
We used to lock away such people and it kept them from slaughtering innocents in violent criminal acts of insanity.

Apparently the one in Provo, UT is still in operation, seems to me it is also used as a major spook alley at Halloween.
That’s right...those used to be pretty grotesque places but at least they weren’t on the streets committing mayhem.
I’m sure they have been modernized like everything else.

We are up to three State Mental Institutions, now with a little research, but the problem as you state appears to be getting the right folks committed. I remember the circumstances you and others have spoken about.
One has to be like the kidnappers of Elizabeth Smart, and caught, before commitment to an institution, and then the fun begins by lawyers to get them back out on the street.
Jared Loughner sounds way past the borderline stage.
He was told to leave community college(”danger to others”) and instructors and students frightened by his behavior.
Well he apparantly wasn’t locked up in a mental institution was he?

I think the writer is correct in “fearing” the legislators reaction.
That is my point.
He should have been taken out of circulation some time ago.
If they want to deploy a couple local cops at their public appearances with NO POLICE BUDGET INCREASE, then fine and dandy.
Well, I know a lot about the crazies (on both sides of the locked door), and I couldn't agree more.
There are at least 100 000, maybe more, for whom both Christian charity (asylum) and public safety should demand permanent hospitalization.
But "let's not throw money at the problem"?
Are you kidding? It will cost trillions to deal effectively with all the people like Loughner, and Kaszinski, and Hinckley, and Cho, and on, and on. That's why the State Hospitals were all closed and why public psychiatry has, effectively, ceased to exist. There was no money for it (no votes in it, I mean) as long ago as 1963.
I see no chance that an effective public psychiatry system can be re-created under current conditions.
You need to get it through your head that, under current conditions, THERE'S NOTHING TO DO.
Every entity that existed to deal with people like this in 1960 has been defunded or disbanded, and the courts have ruled repeatedly that coercive treatment is unconstitutional.
I have seen people like this in emergency rooms for years (not often, it's not my field).
It is shocking how few resources are available to physicians when they meet a character like this. A busy ER will see a Loughner, or a Cho, two or three times a month. Multiply by 4000 busy ERs, multiply that by $150 000/patient for a year in a State Hospital, add the number of lawyers and judges working to "free" chronic schizophrenics and then divide by the number of votes for politicians who want to spend money on crazy people, well...you do the math.
