Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is "100 percent" certain to survive, said Dr. Peter Rhee, a surgeon treating her for a gunshot wound to the head.
"As a physician I'm going to get into a lot of trouble for this, but her prognosis for survival is 100 percent, as far as it being short term," Rhee told Britain's Channel 4 News (watch the video below).
"Hopefully she'll live to be 95 years old," said Rhee, the medical director for University Medical Center's trauma center.
"What her recovery is going to do I really don't know. I'm very optimistic however that she's not going to be in a vegetative type of state," Rhee said.
"I think she's going to make a fair amount of recovery. What kind of deficits she'll have in the future I really can't say at this point but I'm still very optimistic," Rhee said.
Giffords remained in critical condition at UMC after she was shot in the head while meeting with constituents Saturday.
Six were killed and 13 others were shot, authorities said.
Accused shooter Jared Lee Loughner, 22, made an initial appearance in a Phoenix court Monday. Loughner faces five federal charges in the killings of U.S. District Court Judge John M. Roll and Gabriel Zimmerman, a member of Giffords' staff; and attempting to kill Giffords and two other staffers: Ron Barber and Pamela Simon.

It will be really interesting to see how her political future plays out. There have to be Az Dems who are already deciding if they will run for her seat. Would she run again, though she would not be able to serve her constituents? Would she have a primary? She barely got re-elected last November. And for those who might think this post is insensitive, rest assured that state Dems have already been thinking long and hard about it....also..life goes on..
I say she wont blame the gun but mental illness
Thank you, I stand corrected.
+1 what you said and her family as well.
That IS my hope and prayer and also that she will regain everything as before and live a normal life.
With hwere the bullet came out it is going to be hard to predict what if any personality changes she may have or not have.I’m sure she is going to survive the question is will it still be the person her loved ones knew?I’ve also rad that injuries to that part of the brain can cause long term problems with seizures so hopefully she will nt have to deal with those.
While I pray for Giffords' recovery, her seat should soon be filled by a special election.
Good point regarding security. Haven’t seen anyone question why there apparently wasn’t any sheriff’s presence at the meet and greet at the Safeway. Wouldn’t have anything to do with why the Sheriff has been so motivated to bloviate in other directions to distract from the responsibilities he and his department did not carry out that morning?
I mean, come on. A congresswoman schedules a public meeting at a shopping center in her district IN ADVANCE WITH NOTICE and you don’t even assign a sheriff’s deputy or two to be there? On a Saturday morning? Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture?
Well we know from the reports that she has movement and cognitive ability so far. Thank God.
What is 100% certain about her long term survival is this; and it is 100% certain about all of us. We will ALL die, 100%.
She may have a greater than 99.99% of surviving THIS incident, but long term.....
