Arizona residents are locking arms to stop the Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funerals for victims of Saturday's shooting in Tucson, with bikers and others organizing a massive counter-protest and state lawmakers fast-tracking a bill to hamstring the group.

The Kansas-based Westboro church is notorious for showing up at the funerals of dead soldiers and other high-profile gatherings wielding anti-gay signs.

But when the church announced it would picket the funeral Thursday for the 9-year-old girl fatally shot over the weekend at a Tucson grocery store by a gunman who allegedly killed five others and injured 14 others attending a town-hall session by Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Tucson- and Phoenix-area residents started organizing immediately.

One city did the right thing with the Westboro crowd. After someone slashed the tires on their van, no one in the town/city would help them fix their van.

The police did escort the disabled van out of the city/town/county (as I recall).

I am not saying one should slash tires, but if their tires do get slashed, why help them get them fixed so they go to another funeral?

There is also this from the article about the Arizona State Legislature passing legislation in this regard:

Arizona state lawmakers are also scrambling -- to pass a bill that would order protesters to stay 300 feet away from the funeral. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the lead sponsor on the bill, said in an e-mail to colleagues that the plan is to suspend the rules Tuesday and fast-track the bill to protect the victims' families from the "hateful protest" from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Arizona residents are locking arms

Must we have another reference to "arms" and "locking"? How many more have to die before we put an end to this insensitivity?

You are talking about my friends in McCalester OK.

OK is the only state where not a single county voted for Obozo. Oklahoma is OK in my books.

Lefties had better think twice about messing with OK. And if they need help, I know a lot in TX who are willing to go there to assist if asked.

We need to start referring to the so-called church as the Westboro Bastard Coalition as that would be truth in labeling.

If everybody near the event turned ther backs and the whore media would shut down their cameras and recorders, Westboro would simply evaporate.

Talk about insensitivity, must you use "Arms" and "locking" in the same sentence with "die?"

I mean, what if somebody was offended?

What if it was someone of the left? (It would have to be because nobody else would be offended.)

What motives do you think would be attributed to you?

We have to stop all these angry words.

It could lead to seniors showing up a town hall meetings asking questions about (shudder) Obamacare, or worse even, birth certificates and such.

We just can't have that. /sarc

Cases & resources, Funeral protests

More than 40 states and the U.S. Congress have passed laws limiting funeral protests — largely as a direct result of the Westboro Baptist Church. Many municipalities have also passed funeral-protest ordinances at the local level.

The measures generally criminalize protests near funeral processions as a form of disorderly conduct. The measures typically impose both time and distance limitations. Some of the laws only prohibit protesting at military funerals, while many others ban protests at any funeral.
