Congressional advocates of gun control are preparing legislation to renew a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines of the sort suspected used in last Saturdays shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz.
Such a ban was in effect between 1994 and 2004 as part of a ban on assault weapons, which also expired. Since then, clips such as those allegedly used by suspect Jared Loughner, which contained more than 30 rounds, have been available for purchase without restriction. Legislation restricting ammunition magazines to a maximum 10 rounds is in the works by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D) of New York and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) of New Jersey.
The tragedy in Tucson might not have resulted in so many deaths and injuries if the gunman had been limited to 10 rounds before attempting to reload, gun control advocates say. In all, six people died and 14 were wounded 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D) of Arizona.
Congresswoman McCarthy, who ran for Congress after her husband was killed and son injured in a 1993 shooting on the Long Island Rail Road, suggests she is focusing on ammunition magazines as opposed to the weapons themselves in a bow to political reality.
I have to look at ... what can actually pass in Congress and have it signed by the president, McCarthy said Tuesday in an interview with National Public Radio. The House and the Senate are pro-gun houses.
Many Democrats in both Houses of Congress including Congresswoman Giffords favor broad gun rights, and so passing legislation that limits the size of ammunition clips could be an uphill climb. But the history of gun control legislation is that it has its best chance after a major firearms-related event.

Horse-droppings. Gifford is on the record as being in favor of banning semi-automatic firearms. Incidentally, by definition semi-automatic long arms aren’t “assault rifles.”
“clips” The M-1 Garand used clips but most handguns and semi-auto rifles and carbines use magazines. As usual, where firearms are concerned they have no idea what they’re talking about and don’t understand the terms or even their positions.
True. They are certainly using this crisis for benefit by using it to paint conservatives as radicals who lead to the tragedy, more gun regulation, and fundraising
And so, Speaker of the House John Boehner will simply refuse to let such a bill come to the floor, right?
Right?
LOL! That is a very good idea. I like the way you think.
“Maybe we should instead make it a felony for any lawmaker to come within 1000 feet of an armed citizen.”
And thinking this thru... At least that would not be unconstitutional.
Mr. King didn’t really think things through did he?
LOL!
I have a sensible solution that should make everybody happy. Congress should make a law that makes it illegal to shoot people
I don’t think so:

This cast of character’s act is wearing thin and the support is not there. Concentrate on the economy, repeal Obamacare and kick the Bozo out of office is what we want. This shooting does not move me at all. Sheriff Dimwit did not do his job and that greatly needs to be emphasized.

They need to get on with business.
vaudine
True. There are many here who haven't a clue either, despite the suggestions to get a clue. Look at what the government is doing to us. Our freedom is being taken from us slowly and incrementally.
Really, we sent them there to repeal Obamacare, not this!!
The repubs will cave with a sympathy vote. Oh, and they will stuff this bill with other gun, magazine, and ammo bans as well.
Buy what you can now!
Lotsa guys can do that.
And I'm guessing those that can't will simply disregard this law during their murderous rampage.
This is insane. In the Pelosi run Congress only bills she approved would be introduced.
The tyrantcrats and moderate Republicrats will try to run the same `Statue of Disliberty’ play they ran in `68, using this tragedy as a pretext.

Conservatives and libertarians won’t stand for it this time. The internet has made us too organized for a similar infringement on the 2nd Amendment.
First, it’s only `Saturday Night Specials’, then it’s all semi-auto handguns, then `non-hunting long-arms’, then shotguns ... next thing you know, we’re England trying to hang on to our Daisy airguns.
Them and Us
They should understand that when we say we intend to keep our arms to protect our liberty, well, that’s what the framers meant and exactly what we mean—by force of arms, if necessary, and we aren’t talking about protecting ourselves from foreign terrorists but domestic terrorists, AKA as American “gun grabbers”.
We are no more radical than the Founding Fathers; any American, of any political stripe, who wants to take away our liberty is a pre-revolutionary tyrant.
