First Latina governor’s historic inauguration gets little national news coverage
Fox News ^ | 1/11/11 | Christina Corbin

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez made history when she was sworn in New Year's Day as the nation's first Latina governor.

But the rising GOP star's momentous victory for the Hispanic community earned her little recognition in the national media.

Several mainstream news outlets like the Washington Post and Chicago Tribune -- even FoxNews.com -- neglected to mention her Hispanic heritage, while others such as the New York Times failed to cover the events as she took the oath during a chilly outdoor ceremony on the Santa Fe Plaza.

The apparent oversight prompted some media analysts to question why Martinez – as well as a handful of conservative Hispanics – has been left largely out of the national news spotlight.

"The media is not paying sufficient attention to the number of Hispanic conservatives who are elected to statewide offices and to Congress, especially in the western states," said Mike Gonzalez, vice president of communication at the Heritage Foundation and a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal.

Of course she doesn't get the coverage. She's not the "right kind" of Latina.

Frankly, I wonder if the lack of ‘buzz’ and press spin about this event is due to security concerns; certainly LEOs must be deeply concerned about copy cat crimes perpetrated upon politicians and/or conservative women at this time???

Even on the local news and political forums the libs are talking about how overweight she is (maybe 25 pounds). Very little mention that she has already put into place cuts into the bloated garbage that Richardson left us. And even on that they are complaining that she probably is just hiding her real intentions of annexing New Mexico to Texas.

Exactly and ignoring her bespeaks of their racism and bigotry.

Look, her name is Martinez. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the name is Hispanic. While there is hypocrisy by the media on this(”I’m shocked!”), I’m pretty sure the average voter figured out the scene.

My brother lives in Albuquerque. Already he seems quite happy with the new governor.

I’m guessing she’s not a radical Marxist with a shady background.

By leftist definition, she isn’t even a person.

Compared to the fatty she replaced? Unbelievable. A Hispanic conservative in the 2012 election would totally destroy Barky, who can't win without the Hispanic vote. Barky has already lost the White vote. What he's got left are Blacks and Hispanics.

She appointed a real scientist (not a global-warming drooler) to head the energy commission. That makes her a flat-earth denalist energy imperialist.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has selected former astronaut Harrison "Jack" Schmitt as secretary of the state's Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

Former Senator and astronaut Dr. Schmitt has walked on the moon and has a Ph.D. from Harvard. He will be paid $105,000. He completely rejects AGW. What a gift.

Susana Martinez carries her own .45 and has a quick draw.

I’ve noticed that geologists like Dr. Schmitt generally have a big picture perspective on climate and tend to avoid the chicken little syndrome that infects some physicists. (Hopefully that statement won’t make the physicists here mad at me)
