Palin Calls Criticism ‘Blood Libel’
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2011 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR

Posted on 01/12/2011 5:42:46 AM PST by reaganaut1

Sarah Palin, who had been silent for days, on Wednesday issued a forceful denunciation of her critics in a video statement that accused pundits and journalists of “blood libel” in their rush to blame heated political rhetoric for the shootings in Arizona.

“Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own,” she said in a video posted to her Facebook page. “Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.”

Ms. Palin’s use last year of a map with crosshairs hovering over a number of swing districts, including that of Gabrielle Giffords, had increasingly become the symbol of that overheated rhetoric. In and interview with The Caucus on Monday, potential 2012 rival Tim Pawlenty, the former Republican governor of Minnesota, said he would not have produced such a map.

But in the video, Ms. Palin rejected criticism of the map, casting it as a broader indictment of the basic political rights of free speech exercised by people of all political persuasions.

She said that acts like the shootings in Arizona “begin and end with the criminals who commit them, not collectively with all the citizens of a state.”

“Not with those who listen to talk radio,” she added. “Not with maps of swing districts used by both sides of the aisle. Not with law abiding citizens who respectfully exercise their first amendment rights at campaign rallies. Not with those who proudly voted in the last election.”

“”excuse me EVERYONE...
I listened twice to the video and did a word search on the transcript and did not find the words ‘blood libel’.

You trolls can all stop now, and move on to something else.”””

___

Your word search program is not working. Here is the sentence that included “blood libel”.

But, especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.

I disagree with that. The term blood libel exactly describes what the media did. If Jews didn’t exist it would still exactly describe what the media did. It’s something that the man on the street will understand even without knowing the origin of the term.

I think that all this that comes from conservatives makes her stronger, so when she’s got to face the libtards... she’ll be ready for it.

It is libel. With or without the word blood next to it. What the media is doing is LIBEL in every sense of the word.

Do you know where the blood comes in ?

Picture a 9 year old girl laying on the ground bleeding to death with her pupils dilated.

that is blood alright. it is blood and its libel. she was right.

think about the context. do you really think Palin should issue an apology ?

Guess what, bucko? That image is a complete manufacture of the MSM - and you are joining in on it. Typical. It's pretty pathetic that you are joining in the line of attack on the Tea Party instead of defending it here.

Again, I'm just telling you the truth, which apparently you recognize but don't want to acknowledge. That's your problem, not mine

As for the Tea Party movement -- no, I don't have much use for it, because it seems to be viscerally opposed to doing those things that would make it politically effective in a positive way, rather than just being a group of folks saying what they're against.

The people who were really blood libeled often ended up dead or in prison, and many were sent off to gas chambers.

It’s like using the word slavery to describe some minor inconvenience of government; you might feel like you are enslaved, but to those who experienced slavery, your attempts to equate your plight with theirs will seem shallow and self-serving. (Yes, I know that these days there aren’t people around who have esperienced slavery, so it’s not a perfect analogy).

This is like how the blacks get upset when gay people try to claim that they are as oppressed as blacks were, and deserve the same corrective treatment. Blacks who actually went through segregation, fear for their lives, being treated as second-class citizens, being denied work, being pushed to the back of the bus, all simply for what they LOOKED like, resent gay people trying to claim equal victimhood.

What the left is trying to do to the right is absurd, and uncivil, and reprehensible. False accusations that we contributed to murder, with all evidence pointing elsewhere, is beneath contempt. But we aren’t in danger of being rounded up and sent to death camps. At worst, one or two people might have their chances at getting elected President damaged, and their reputations sullied. That’s bad, but it’s hardly the same as what Jews experienced in Europe when they were being “blood libeled”.

Sometimes it’s best NOT to try to take other group’s specific oppressions, and use their words to describe your own sufferings. It suggests an equality that will most likely turn people’s sympathies AGAINST you.

Frankly, we had WON this battle already. Most americans rejected the claim, and we were getting sympathy. I think the left can easily spin the use of the term “blood libel” and remove most of that sympathy.

[I have the feeling I just witnessed history upclose and personal.]

Yeah, as a writer I hear a speech like that and think that’s about as tightly worded as it gets. And for those who think its all done by a speech writer, I am sure it was vetted, but the whole thing has the distinctive Palin verbal flavor. She’s hitting on all eight cylinders.

Yes, but it also means that all members of the group are considered guilty, just because.

I’ll withdraw the word “every” from my assertion, but the rest of it stands.

Thereby reducing your previous stupid comment to a bit of flaccid twaddle that sounds all manly, but means nothing.

It's easy to see why you don't understand Sarah Palin's mistake in using the term "blood libel."

I think that the use of the term “BLOOD LIBEL” is nothing short of brilliant!

The MSM will now waste vast amounts of air time and effort, to define it, criticize it and use it against her. This is like throwing a bloody, meat covered bone into the middle of a pack of fighting Pit Bulls. The Public will grow very tired of it. Sarah's name will become a household word, and more and more people will look into her profile even deeper.

When that happens, her intelligence, integrity and intuitive logic will go to her credit, while at the same time, completely expose the MSM for what they truly are; The REAL cause of all this deadly Leftist rhetoric.

I think you are guilty of blood libeling Palin’s intentions.

Blood libel? Wierd way of putting it. That normally applies to an ethnic group.

Palin will once again add a nuance to the English language that will be accepted by the Oxford English Dictionary and will make the left scream.
