When the libs/socialists succeed at making us defenseless against the GOV, cars are on a long list of other banned things they have in mind “for us, not them”.

A derringer is better than nothing but certainly not my first or even 25th choice.

“Wow.... a rare accident”

Not really an accident, more like negligence.

Rush’s fault.

A toss-up with

"Bush's fault."

"Let me guess -- a novelty weapon carried shoved into a coat pocket with no holster. What could go wrong?

Most of these things should not be used for concealed carry. If the hammer is down, the firing pin is resting on the primer. If it is cocked, the trigger is exposed.

Criminal stupidity. "

^^^ This right here.

IMHO he is open to a charge of negligence. Those who are not openly hostile to CCW permits could easily feel this man doesn’t deserve a get-out-of-jail-free card. And I agree.

With rights come responsibilities. In this case the responsibilities include the safe handling of the weapon you choose carry as an exercise your right to do so.

don’t Derringers have safeties?

They don't even have trigger guards, which is why they are completely unsuited to personal defense.

Most derringer safeties are what is between yer ears...

I won’t carry a derringer because of this very type of incident...

A holstered firearm, in my opinion (and I am sure to catch a lot of caca for this, but hey), is a more credible, and safe method of carrying as far as I am concerned...

In Texas, until an open carry provision is passed, we’ll have to canceal carry and put up with the weather extremes until that time...

It is unfortunate someone got hurt, and hopefully the permit holder will re-think their choice of firearm (and carry method) in the future...

Well. your “distance” issue is a good one, but like I tell people from experience, if you are hurt and need top medical treatment, and are only able to say two words before you pass out...

“Ben Taub”...;-)

In some “area” medical protocols, when a GSW call comes in, it bypasses local facilities, which in some cases might very well be able to handle it, it just gets bumped up to the pros down in the Medical Center...

The only safety on any Derringer of which I am aware is the semi-cocked position of the hammer. If dropped, the gun should not fire with the hammer in this position. Obviously, this guy was carrying around a weapon either fully cocked or with the hammer resting on the firing pin. Stupid either way. But then, he also showed his intelligence with the weapon of choice anyway.

Many derringers have safeties. All the Davis derringers do.

To set it you put the derringer in half cock and then push the safety button in.

My bad! You are correct as my Davis .22WMR did have a real hammer block safety. Thanks for reminding/correcting me.

Hair triggers will go off, if the gun is dropped.

Does it seem to you that the hammer block works backwards for a right handed shooter? Does to me.
