ATLANTA -- A decision to use the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to make up a snow day in Georgia has infuriated civil rights leaders, who say the districts are insulting the civil rights icon in his home state.
Fannin and Gilmer counties in north Georgia and a school district in North Carolina are calling students to class on the federal holiday after school was wiped out for the week because of the epic snowstorm that paralyzed the state.
The superintendents from the districts said they had little choice to start making up for nine days missed because of the foul winter weather this school year. But civil rights leaders said the decision was an insult to King and shows disrespect for the holiday in his name.
"It's an opportunity for people, black and white, to reflect on what King's dream meant for blacks and whites," said Georgia State Conference NAACP President Edward DuBose. "And it's humiliating to hear that school districts want to take a snow day rather than to honor Dr. King's legacy."

Can you believe that crap? If it was President’s Day no one would say a word.
I thought the school districts should declare today MLK.
Well, that is because you aren’t in the city! :-)
Right. Let’s keep ‘em ignorant and shoeless rather than get some more education. That’s what the good Dr. would have wanted...sheesh!!!!! Stevie666
The education of minority children was probably pretty high on Dr. King’s priority list.
Our school system has a policy of no school on Veteran’s Day and MLK day since most of the schools participate in the local parades.
The education of minority children is not pretty high on the libs priority list.
Ah, don’t worry about it. The kids weren’t going to learn anything anyway. Those workbook sheets and viewings of “Twister” or the “Story Of Stuff” will still be there when they return.
Think of it as one less day of indoctrination.
I lived in a city in Virginia that celebrated MLK day in conjunction with Robert E. Lee’s and Stonewall Jackson’s birthdays.
Its called Lee-Jackson-King day.
Dumboworld
Everyone doesn’t celebrate King Day so we should call it January Holiday. We don’t want to offend anyone.
Just sayin'.....
oh fer cripes sake....
nothin better to whine about, evidently.
I suppose they wouldn’t approve of our office being closed today for Lee/Jackson Day but open on Monday.
Hey, snow is white isn’t it? ‘nuff said. ;-)
My kids have never had MLK day off, they have the Friday afterwards off.
M(i)LK Day is the High Holy Day of the year. How dare they expect kids to go to school /s
The bottom line is that they really are complaining that they have to do anything...because they have been wronged in the past. Give them reparations and let them alone. MLK would be embarrassed by the attitudes of “these people”.
There is only a small “segment” of population in our area that gives a rat’s behind about this “holiday”...a school-government-bank day off only...magritte
Atlanta schools have been closed this week but they are still taking Monday off for MLK Day. It’s ridiculous that the school don’t use Monday as a make up day. Schools are too afraid of the “R” word. Some schools are using President’s Day and/or the Monday after Easter as make up days.
