USDA announces expanded child supper program (Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The government is officially announcing on Friday an expanded program that should provide 140,000 to 150,000 children from low income families with supper meals, a senior Agriculture Department official said.

A federal program aiding such children, many with parents away from home until late in the evening, has been in operation in 13 states and the District of Columbia, but USDA Under Secretary Kevin Concannon told Reuters in an interview that "this afternoon the official announcement goes out that the program will be available in all 50 states."

The expansion, authorized in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 signed into law in December, "is likely to enroll about between 140,000 and 150,000 children nationally," said Concannon, who has responsibility for federal food and nutrition programs.

He said organizations such as schools, boys and girls clubs and community groups had been waiting for the announcement so they could take advantage of the program. It will enable them to be paid by the federal government for providing the suppers if they meet the standards for eligibility and the meals meet health and nutrition requirements.

The program will be "available in areas where the local schools have at least half of the children attending the school receiving free or reduced-price lunches as part of the national school lunch program," Concannon said.

"The principle goal in this case is to make sure that kids are getting adequately fed and getting nutritious food," he said.

amazing that we have so many talented legislators, lawmakers and leaders and a bureaucracy that bows to no one else globally,, and an economy that once led the free world and fed it too.. and now.. we lag.. we pass legislation that takes jobs away, we turn food into fuel and refuse to tap the natural resources at home..

hundreds of thousands of children go to bed hungry.. yet FLotUS says we're a nation of fatties.. like I said .. amazing

It seems to many in elected office, Job #1 is getting re-elected and using OPM to do so and then pretending they are doing it ‘for the children’.

Why doesn’t everyone just give up their children to the state? They can house and clothe them too. Already doing 2/3 of daily meals.

Dope dealing is long hard work

All for THREE TENTHS OF ONE PERCENT (0.3%) of the student population.

In a school of 1,000 children this 0.3% is, wait for it, THREE children!

Wonder what it will cost that one school to provide dinner for THREE children? A cook for starters, someone to supervise, someone to keep the lights on and someone to administrate the program. I count at least FOUR people who will be paid overtime each school day all for THREE children out of each 1,000!

Is it any wonder we are broke? Does this make you want to go out in the street and SCREAM?

How about a return to the food distribution program. Rather than getting to chose what gets purchased, pick out the nutricious food stuffs, put them in a box and deliver to the needy families.

The IRS today also announced that lower income people would be receiving their tax refunds directly to their debit cards. What they meant to say was the direct welfare subsidiary paid by the IRS will be funneled directly to those receiving it. Now splain this to me: How dows someone with no income have a debit card in the first place? Second, since one can receive their lawful refund by direct deposit, why do we need to make these direct deposits anyway or are they saying based on last year, we will on Jan 1st, wire what we believe you earned income tax credit will be? Wanna bet it is the latter?? Just another tax fraud orchestrated by the great provider in the White House IMO.

Wow, so they can eat ammonia treated beef? Yum! http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/01/yuck-factor-ammonia-in-your-beef/

Seriously, don’t these people already get food stamps? How much more can we take?

Naw, they tend to congregate in certain areas. I bet Detroit schools will have 40+% enrollment where out in urban areas the numbers will drop to zero.

I don’t understand what’s wrong with our politicians. Why didn’t they name it the “Healthy, Happy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010”?

Don’t these kids deserve to be happy too?

exactly that is what they are trying to do.
check out their rules dating back to 1963 and check rule 41

http://www.uhuh.com/nwo/communism/comgoals.htm

if anyone does not think that we’re still at war with communists then they need to get their head out of their arse.

You only have to look at their manifesto and then see, hear the language the left uses.

BTW rule 15 was completed years ago and now have obama as their leader.

don’t they get food stamps?

Sure they do. They just don't feed the kids with them.

Seen that myself.

If they're going to have their kids fed for free in school lunch programs, they ought to cut food stamps accordingly.

While those of us working to support all these lazy people who won’t feed their kids eat Top Ramen, the elites dine like kings on our dime, and the lazy ones do too.
