Russia launches arms race with new intercontinental ballistic missile
Telegraph ^ | 14 Jan 2011 | Andrew Osborn

Russia is developing a replacement for the world's most devastating intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a move that risks reviving a global nuclear arms race.

the head of Rosobshemash said the new missile would be capable of overcoming any nuclear missile shield that the Americans or indeed anyone else might build. "This applies in the fullest sense to the USA's anti-missile defence system and to Nato's (planned) European missile defence system," said Artur Usenkov.

Russia is developing the new missile despite recently negotiating a new landmark Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with the United States which will see both countries make deep cuts in their nuclear arsenals in the years ahead.

The move comes as Russia pushes ahead with the biggest overhaul of its armed forces since the fall of the Soviet Union. Vladimir Putin, the prime minister, said the Kremlin planned to spend twenty trillion roubles (£420 billion) on the task in the next decade.

To have a race, you have to have someone to race against. Candidates need to line up, maybe Japan?

What if they had an arms race, but a retard of monumental proportions in the White House decided to sit it out?

This is simply fabulous news. I never would have guessed that the Russians would have tricks up their sleeve. (sarc/off)

Barry knows how to counter this:

Unilaterally disarm America. That way, the neo-USSR will be morally compelled to abandon their military upgrade.

Really. That's how those idiots "think".

“.... the new missile would be capable of overcoming any nuclear missile shield that the Americans or indeed anyone else might build”....I call BS! Yeah, that is why they did not want us putting a missile shield in Poland, etc., huh?! =.=

You know I'm getting the the point where I don't care anymore. If Russia wants to spend billions on new ICBMs let them waste their money. Europe's economy taken together is bigger than our own, so they can pay for their own damn defense. If they want to be dominated by Russia, then let them. We should stop garrisoning the whole world, get to work on an top-rate American missile defense shield and upgrade our own offensive capabilities without regard to Russia - let everyone know that if they mess with us, it's no more Mr. nice guy, limited-engagement, hearts-and-minds, nation rebuilder crap. We'll make a smoking crater out of your sh*t country in time to catch the evening news. We're tired of being blamed for the world's problems. They can fight dictatorship, economic blackmail, Islam, Marxism and the rest of it on their own. We've kept the lid on the stinking corpse of humanity long enough - the world's going to tear itself apart again because that's what humans do. Time we prepared to weather the storm again like WWII. Who wants to buy arms?

I think we should give a few small tactical nukes to Chechnya.

They’re trying to out-Reagan us. It’s as clear as day. Putin is a cold warrior. The U.S. is bankrupting itself and we can ill-afford an arms race. Russia’s debt, by contrast, is the lowest of the G20 nations. Having obtained an agreement with us to downsize our aresenal, while securing what they believe to be the renunciation of the missle defense shield that Gorbachev had wanted but Reagan wouldn’t concede, they are now launching an arms modernization program to establish global offensive military supremacy.
