Despite risks, Obama ready to press China on human rights
Washington Post ^ | January 15, 2011 | Scott Wilson

President Obama is planning to refocus attention on China's record of suppressing free speech and political freedom in the coming weeks, despite the risk of further destabilizing an important relationship after a contentious year.

Since elevating human rights as a guiding principle of his foreign policy at the United Nations last fall, Obama has been looking for ways to engage China's leaders on the issue without undermining his efforts to enlist their help in dealing with Iran and North Korea, and in reviving the world economy.

Senior administration officials say he is exploring ways to better reach Chinese citizens directly, perhaps by using technology unavailable to many of his predecessors.

He has also been seeking advice from Chinese dissidents and human rights advocates ahead of President Hu Jintao's state visit next week. On Thursday, Obama met for more than an hour at the White House with five advocates for human rights in China, the first time he has done so in that venue.

While economic and security issues are likely to be the focus of Hu's visit, how Obama manages the topic of human rights will help define his summit with Hu and provide clues to how the president intends to speak with China in the years ahead about political prisoners, an inconsistent rule of law and a repressed civil society.

Already, Obama is set to achieve the distinction of being the first U.S. president to host a head of state who is currently holding a Nobel Peace laureate in prison.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton began to set the tone on China with a speech Friday at the State Department.

"The president's style in talking about human rights is different than others have used," said one senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to talk candidly on the sensitive subject. "His convictions come through strongly, but he is not interested in hectoring or lecturing or embarrassing them. He's interested in affecting how people think."

China will likely politely nod as Obama attempts to reason with them, and then they'll go back to the same ole' same ole'.

...we have to stop letting Dumbo slip by without attaching his name to every decision made....example, IT WAS NOT NAPOLITANO’S DECISION to drop, hold off,or delay border security work...IT WAS OBAMA’S. Another example...the recent memorial, the pundits cooed, Obama was taken back by the applause during his speech...BS!...he relished in it, he knew t-shirts and souvenirs were being handed out,he knew Gabby had her eyes opened before his visit... ..the guy is a control freak, to try to play the “healer” or consoler, there’s a new Dumbo word, while all the while he stood silently while vile accusations were made (and still being made)and he’s the healer? Any and all EPA,Homeland,TSA,Health,SSI,GM,Hillary,....any of them. HE HAS THE FINAL NOD!
HE WILL BOW, to set the discussions and tone which will automatically result in the United States losing again.
Foreign leaders know he’s a light weight idiot and they already have the upper hand, THEY ARE NOT GOING TO GIVE HIM ANYTHING!

Despite risks

Risks to whom? Certainly not to Obozo. Typical for the Washington Compost.

I believe you are right.....China will listen, nod, and then go back and torture Christians or something.

Obama will not do anything....he is a Commie, and, a Free Trader...and neither of the two care what Communist China does...even at the expense of American jobs and the American economy.

Its time to end Free Trade with Communist China...slap a huge tariff on Communist Chinese goods. It will not only motivate the Communist Chinese to change their ways...it will help the US economy.

Supporters of Free Trade with Communist China are Communists

You are dead on. However, as a communist, Obama has many things in common with the Chicoms: propaganda, suppressing differing viewpoints, central planning of the economy, and government health care.

Hell, Obama even has plans for declaring martial law, deploying the armed forces of the US against the American people and suppressing mass demonstrations that might occur as a result of his economic policies. The Chicoms can give him some tips on TIANANMEN SQUARE: don’t let some dipshit stand in front of your tanks! /sarc

They can also give him tips on THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE; silencing talk radio and Fox News; and controlling the internet. OBAMA WILL BE ALL EARS!!!! Literally and figuratively.

...three years ago we all knew who he was and what he intended to do. NOTHING has changed except to the extent of the $$$$$$ spent and printed. Since when has Congress passed a law by “deeming” it pass....AND exclude those who pass such a LAW from it’s regulations?

Achieve? Distinction? WaPo spins the wording to make it sound like a good thing.

Rubbish.

Political posturing.

Just remember they made the Dalai Lama literally sneak in and out of the White House. The riots and massacres in Xinjiang - silence.

This is just fodder for the Richard Gere crowd.
